Is there a guideline of what order to reintroduce foods?

Post by WendyU »

When I was diagnosed I stopped eating almost everything. I eat rice, chex, turkey, well cooked veggies gluten free pasta beef and duck eggs. I can not afford the Nutrolab test. I have searched but cannot find any guidelines pertaining to what order is easiest on the gut. Can anyone help me?

We're all so different that there are no standardized rules that I'm aware of. The best way to select foods to try would probably be to listen to your body for signals on which foods might be worth trying. If you're considering trying gluten, there's no point in doing that, because were all sensitive to gluten, permanently. And don't be in a big hurry to try anything because it took me at least six months after I recovered, before I could add any foods. Eventually, I could tolerate dairy products, and soy, but I had to stop eating them again anyway, after I discovered that the casein in dairy products causes osteoarthritis for me, and I became sensitive to soy also, after a few more years. Chicken eggs will be simple enough to test. The more your intestines heal, the more fiber you will be able to tolerate, and that will dictate whether or not you can eat many foods, or what size servings you can have safely. More healing will help you to tolerate more sugar also, which will make certain desserts safer. And a certain level of healing will be required before you'll be able to eat salads again, or anything that contains raw vegetables.

The bottom line is it takes 2 to 5 years for our intestines to heal. Kids can heal in a year or less. So when we're trying to reintroduce foods, later is much safer than sooner

I hope this helps,

Thank you. Yes, it helps. I'm feeling a bit down lately and I'm craving flavor. I need to figure out different ways to use the things I can eat i guess. I'm only 5 months in. I'm feeling pressure from family to introduce new foods. "A little bit won't hurt" or "You're your own worst enemy". I know I need to be patient. Thanks for listening.

The only seasoning I ever use is garlic salt. It does wonders for some foods.

I have been following the stage one eating plan on here for over a month and have been on Budesonide 9mg daily since April 5th. I have had success recently and although by no means normal by BM is not D and I am only going a few times a day. My question is do I start introducing new foods while on the Budesonide? I'm afraid I won't get an accurate response to sensitivity because the Budesonide will mask it.
Thanks,
Mary

Hi Mary,

You're correct, the budesonide will tend to mask symptoms for most of us. But what kind of bowel movements did you have before you developed MC? Unless it was something less than formed, three or four times per day, it sounds as though you're still not in remission, and you either need more healing time, or something in your diet is still bothering your immune system. Most of us who take budesonide need to be on the medication for at least 3 to 6 months before our intestines heal enough that we are having normal bowel movements and we can justify adding, or trying to add, new foods to our diet. Also, if you wean off budesonide too quickly, you're likely to relapse, this early in the healing process. At least that seems to be true for most of us.

Thanks Tex. My BMs prior to MC were formed and only a couple times a day so I must not be in remission. I will stay on stage one until I go off the Budesonide which my GI is saying should take 3-4 months.
