Does anyone know how to motivate yourself to clean?

Post by Jean »

Hi All,

I'm home, laid off until spring. I need to go through everything and get rid of stuff. We are thinking about selling our house and buying one in the country. If we do, we have lots of work to do fixing it up and emptying it out.

I'm having a hard time motivating myself!!! The fact that the sun hasn't been out since Dec. 12 isn't helping.

If you don't have any ideas, I'd be happy for any interuptions, LOL.

Love, Jean

Nope, (Sorry) even my mother saying she wouldn't come to Christmas at my house because of the clutter didn't help! I have to wait for the mood to strike and it doesn't happen often enough.

I have in the past found some good peppy music helps some...B-52s was my "in college" cleaning music.

Hi Jean,

I bribe myself. For instance, what would make ironing do-able? If I can watch a good DVD while I iron. Now I always look forward to ironing for some twisted reason. Really really loud Tina Turner music works for housecleaning, but it has to be loud enough to hear over the vacuum cleaner. Scheduling small chunks of the chores for limited times helps me too: for instance, I will clean the floors, but only between 12 and 1, and then I will lay on the couch and watch Oprah from 1-2. Then I'll write letters, but only 2 letters, and if I'm not done by 2:30 I'll finish later.

As you can see, I'm big into negotiating with myself, because I'm a big procrastinator, and telling myself to "just do it" doesn't work. It's a right brain vs left brain thing.

If all else fails, why clean? We move every 5 years anyway. Love, Marsha

I sympathise with you entirely. I am never moving again Jean, it is far too traumatic. Apart from the fact that both Robert & I are bower birds, when we moved up here from Brisbane we had been living there for 26 years & had the house here as well for holidays for about 10. We of course had 2 of most things & although we left some stuff in the Brisbane house for Jane & her two girlfriends we still had a big surplus of stuff. It was horrendous & I vowed then that never to move again, they will have to take me out in a box. I hate throwing things out. You know the story 'they may come in useful some day' & I am a mad recycler.

Have to tackle my sewing room soon. It is getting difficult to get in there let alone work as I keep buying fabrics that I intend to make something, usually a quilt, with & I am running out of places to store it. Barb I am not a typical Virgo in this respect. I like other people to be neat & tidy but find it difficult to keep my own stuff that way, far too busy
Anyway Jean you have inspired me & I am going to get stuck into it today. And I hope I make it because what usually happens is that while going through & restacking the fabrics I come across a piece that screams at me to make something, & so it goes.

Love

Liz

I usually find that IF I am so inclined to clean, loud music works. It does seem to get the body moving.

I also find that I am a good cleaner if no one is home. I can NOT do anything with Larry - his idea of cleaning is far different from mine! Come to think of it, his idea of ANYTHING is different than mine!

I also seem to have to "be in the mood" to clean. I will "pick up" daily but to really get into it...........I gotta wanna!

Guess I haven't been much help........sorry

Hope something helps! Good luck!

We are certainly alike in that, Mars!! I find it almost impossible to "work" if Bill is home - or anyone else here for that matter. Wonder why that is. It's really tough, since Bill retired, to get anything done at all.

Jean, good luck and if you find the secret - please pass it on. I agree that loud music helps, which I can't do if Bill is home. Maybe that's the problem.

Loud music is a big help to me too. I've got some New Orleans jazz that gets me going. My birds like it too. I get distracted when the birds start dancing and I decide to dance and sing along with them instead of cleaning.

Thanks for the tips. Yesterday was not a good cleaning day, but I did go to the store and make a good dinner. The only thing I hate worse than cleaning is paying bills, so I guess I should tell myself to pay bills and then I'll clean to get out of it. LOL

YEP!!!!!!!
Just get up off your butt and do it!!!!!! I'm not a procrastinator, so it is basically just routine for me.. I find if I do it my way that each time isn't a struggle.. Keeping up on it makes it a whole lot easier..
I also use Motown to get myself working in high gear!!!!!
And I like the feeling of a nice clean and kept home!!!
