Bone Loss at Dental Implant
Hello. I've had a dental implant for 10 years. Six months ago my dentist said that I had some bone loss around the implant & he was keeping an eye on it. At my recent six month check-up he said that he wanted me to see an oral surgeon. Today the oral surgeon said that the cause is bacteria under the implant and he is suggesting to my dentist that I have antibiotic chips put in the pocket of the implant every 3-4 months. Of course the word antibiotic doesn't make me happy, but I am very grateful that the implant doesn't have to be removed. Any suggestionns as to what I should take when the antibiotic is placed at the implant and also what natural products I can use along with the antibiotic? The oral surgeon also said something like if he would have seen me five years ago the bone loss probably could have been prevented. His office was supposed to call me at the five year mark to schedule an appointment, but they never did. With life being busy, I didn't give it a second thought and that's how it turned into 10 years since he last saw me. It also makes me wonder how long ago my dentist noticed something but didn't say anything. I have my teeth cleaned every six months, without fail. Sorry for the long post!

Hi Marcia
sorry for the long post
I have mega dental issues - multiple contributors
- genetics both sides I inherited issues related to dental. (and both parents had full dentures before age 48)
- sickly childhood with lots of sugary cough medicines (never rinsed mouth afterwards)
- intolerances /inflammation etc. lifelong issues
Since I have been on my 'functional wellness' journey my research showed that if I had a troublesome tooth, root canal did not resolve the issue it actually exacerbates ongoing bacterial issues for the teeth and the gut
everytime you eat and drink you are letting that bacteria go into the stomach. Each time now there is an issue I opt to remove the tooth. NO root canal, no crowns, no implants. In the last 10 years I have had 8 premolars and molars removed.
no replacements
this does cause angst with various dentists - I have had some heated discussions about my choice as their philiosophy is to 'save teeth' (and it gives them more income)
health wise - gut and mouth I am certain that once I removed the troublesome teeth this was crucial element to achieving. good gut healing.
my well cooked low fibre MC eating plan removes the need to have all the teeth (another thing that dentists do not understand I have given up explaining)
a bit like MC world, if it was me, rather than doing constant bandaids of the antibiotic chips deal I would consider removing the root cause.
Functionally there are some good options in the mean time
liquid zinc and lingual COQ10 are very good items for mouth health. rinsing the mouth with these items (and spitting the liquid zinc out) is a good option before eating and drinking

there are lots of good articles that may help you with your decision

On a side note a couple of years ago - my elderly mother (86) had a bad fall and had minor fractures in her jawline and the bones going into cheeks
I put her on zinc lozenges and lingual CoQ10. - we increased the Vit D3 and magnesium
the doctors and the specialists were gobsmacked at how well and quickly she healed.
the maxillofacial surgeon was very interested in what we had done with the zinc and CoQ10. admitted he had read articles on it, but again was hesitant to embrace functional approach
I am now about 3 years since the last removal. with good health, and keeping up supplements we have halted the issues with my teeth and confident that I won't have to lose any more for a while yet. I am 51
its tough that in MC world we have to make these 'big' decisions. (I was the same about covid vaccination) sometimes there is no perfect solution.
do some reading research, sit with it for a while and see where some meditation takes you

Thank you, Gabes. So much to think about. I have already decided that I won't have another root canal. The true irony is they say to get an implant so you don't have bone loss....not true in my case. As always, I appreciate your input & experience in dealing with these issues. I'm very grateful for our internet family!
