Afib Cardio Meds and Diarrhea help

Post by Healthy2021 »

Hi Dianne here and so appreciate the information posted on this site! Diagnosed in 2019 with Microscopic Collagenous Colitis. In November I was diagnosed with persistent Afib and cannot get ablation procedure until Mar 1, 2022. The bridge treatment is Sotalol 80 mg 2x a day, Lisinopril 10 mg and Xarelto (blood thinner). For the last 6 days experiencing what seems like one of my MC flare diarrhea episodes. Due to taking Sotalol, cannot take the Pepto Bismol because it will increase bleeding.

Would appreciate input on how to best manage the diarrhea:) Have a call into cardiologists and waiting to hear back on suggestions.

Hi Dianne,

This is way out of our line of expertise, but although Sotalol Interacts with many medications, it should be safe for you to take budesonide. However, you would definitely want to check that out with your cardiologist. I don't see colitis listed as one of the possible side effects, so your MC reaction may be due to something else, or it might not even be an MC reaction. We're all subject to the same issues as everyone in the general public, and everyone has diarrhea, now and then. Diarrhea is indeed a possible side effect of Sotalol, but that's probably ordinary (osmotic) diarrhea. The diarrhea associated with active MC is secretory (high-volume and watery), and I'm sure you recognize the difference, so you should be able to tell the difference.

If you're pretty sure that it's an MC reaction, check your diet to make sure it Isn't being cross contaminated. If you've introduced any new foods lately, avoid them for a while to see if that's the problem. Sorry that I can't be more helpful, but heart issues take precedence over digestive system issues, so you don't want to do anything that might upset the apple cart.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
