SAMBUCCA - ANISETTE - WINE - GF BEER
Hello, ALL - I tried looking up Sambucca and Anisette in a Search of past Topics before writing this, but came up empty. So, I decided to post this...
1) In a cup of demitasse (Italian black coffee) or as a shot after dinner, how safe is either Sambucca or Anisette? (Not daily, but occasionally)
2) Wine...what is considered safe? Red, White, Bubbly, any? With meals or alone? 1 glass? 1/2 a glass? Nightly with dinner?
What should the ingredients say, so you know it's the best one for CC?
3) Gluten Free Beer - Safe? Not a 6-pack. Maybe 1/2 a bottle because the bottles are usually so Big. Again, occasionally. Like in the Summertime.
My Dietician tells me I can have a glass of wine and to go ahead and enjoy it. I am not so sure. I haven't asked her about the other drinks yet. Wanted to check in here first because you guys have been through it all! I trust your accumulated experience!
Thanks, ALL!

Re: SAMBUCCA - ANISETTE - WINE - GF BEER
be aware that even for non MC'ers. alcohol is inflammatory to the body, and highly likely to increase histamine levels in the body
Further alcohol interrupts methylation cycle and depletes key nutrients like magnesium.
In early stages of healing I recommend no alcohol.
when I was healing - I didn't drink alcohol at all for nearly 5 years.
now it is a rare treat. no more than 2-3 serves once every 3 months for special occasions.
If I know I am going to be drinking, I increase P5P (active B6) Magnesium and vitamin D to counteract impact of alcohol. (plan for treats as I mentioned in the other post)
if I do drink - it is either vodka lime and soda or preservative free /organic type red wine.
(I have multiple auto immune conditions and keeping them all in calm remission so I can work full time takes a lot of supplements so I am very cautious about anything that depletes key nutrients)
re wine - check manufacturing methods versus your trigger foods.
A lot of wines are filtered through egg shells. mainstream wines have a lot of sulphides in them that causes inflammation and histamine reaction
like I mentioned in the other post - listen to your body.
If you have the glass or wine or GF beer and there are no noticeable reactions then it will work for you. if there are reactions then I would back away from regular intake.
re the coffee - I drink black coffee with coconut sugar. Coffee in Australia is VERY different to the USA. Ours are milder/sweeter. I purchase a brand and blend that I like the flavour for drinking as black coffee, it is roasted and ground as I order it so there is no risk of bacteria/mold etc.
the other thing re the coffee, I would also be hesitant to have it of a night. coffee is a stimulant and can interrupt good sleep patterns.
Like anything in the food industry you get what you pay for. Mass produced items sold in supermarkets are stored for long periods of time, there can be short cuts in manufacturing and processing to optimise profits. For some food items (not all) there is high risk of contaminates and for a MC'er this can be an issue.
I have never been a beer drinker so can not comment.
my initial thought is that for an item in the USA to be gluten free, it can have up to 20 parts per million of gluten. so a gluten free beer, may still have minuscule amounts of gluten, and ultimately beer is brewed with grains. so you may react to the alternative grains that are being used to produce the GF beer.
(NB in Australia. for a product to advertise/label as a gluten free product it can only have 5 parts per million of gluten).

Re: SAMBUCCA - ANISETTE - WINE - GF BEER
a good article that talks about alcohol production and high risk ingredients etc
https://www.verywellhealth.com/alcohol- ... es-1324211
Dave Asprey - bulletproof diet fame has done lots of podcasts and articles about food industry / hidden additives in food production etc
he has done a few just about wine and alcohol.
this is from his website
Biohacked wine
Typical wine can have 76 different additives, none of which the producers have to disclose on their labels. Artificial coloring, ammonia, defoaming agents, metals, added sugar, and all kinds of other odd chemicals contribute to the crushing hangover a lot of people get from wine.
Wine can also be high in inflammatory, carcinogenic mycotoxins from moldy vats or poor fermentation practices. Then there’s the huge pesticide load that wine grapes carry. Yuck.
I am very blessed here in Australia - I live 30 mins from a wine growing region and there are multiple local producers making preservative free wine.
I get to support local and consume product that causes me minimal issues

Re: SAMBUCCA - ANISETTE - WINE - GF BEER
Hello again, Gabes - I appreciate all the information you took the time and care to offer me, thank you! I will also read up more on it, now that you have brought it to my attention.
"...like I mentioned in the other post - listen to your body.
If you have the glass or wine or GF beer and there are no noticeable reactions then it will work for you. if there are reactions then I would back away from regular intake."
I am not a drinker anyway, but that "no noticeable reaction" part you mentioned....you mean that if I had some Sambucca in my black coffee or just straight, and within a few days, I felt no noticeable reaction, that it would mean it was not challenging my CC stability or damaging my intestines?
And does an alcohol-related reaction alone damage the intestines as if it were a food related flare-up? Does it need healing time all over again or just a few weeks?
Deeply Grateful,
TREESE

Treese,
To save Gabes some time, I'll post my opinion. If Gabes disagrees, hopefully, she'll post her opinion.
I hope this helps,
Tex

You're correct. No symptoms means no damage to your digestive system.Treese wrote:I am not a drinker anyway, but that "no noticeable reaction" part you mentioned....you mean that if I had some Sambucca in my black coffee or just straight, and within a few days, I felt no noticeable reaction, that it would mean it was not challenging my CC stability or damaging my intestines?
isolated insults to your digestive system that cause symptoms will normally cause only cause short-term symptoms/damage. The longer you have been in stable remission, and without inflammation, the less likely individual insults are to be more than temporary problems. But if these insults to your digestive system are repeated regularly, they can, and usually will, eventually cause a flare that may be difficult to resolve.Treese wrote:And does an alcohol-related reaction alone damage the intestines as if it were a food related flare-up? It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Re: SAMBUCCA - ANISETTE - WINE - GF BEER
Hello, TEX - Your replies really helped me to tailor my plan for remaining in remission according to my own particular lifestyle combined with my CC absolutes that must always remain in place.
In the past, You have taught me well from when I first got this crazy life-altering disease and probably saved my life in the process. And since those early days, you have intervened at several moments of crisis or questions.
And now, once again, I thank you for your consistency and accuracy of information, besides your dedication and patience over the years!
I thank Gabes, too, because she took time with me the last few days to offer the benefit of her own experience, as well!
And Brandy, Jari and everyone else whose recent comments are greatly appreciated!
Thanks guys!

Re: SAMBUCCA - ANISETTE - WINE - GF BEER
Thanks Tex
replies are perfect!!
Terese
you are most welcome.
we are more than willing to help anyone who is trying to learn and help themselves to better long term wellness.
the sad reality is - there is no quick fix or magic potion that will eliminate MC (and other auto immune conditions).
learning to live with it, not resent it, is one of the key parts of getting your life back.
in time you will find a relaxed routine - once you have staple eating plan, know your body and how to interpret reactions /symptoms you get to a stage of settlement. you stop overthinking, do less research and settle into that relaxed routine.

Thanks, GABES!
I still have experimenting to do with the unknown kinks that are still keeping me from remaining more or less in that over-all comfort zone you spoke of, but I'm really applying myself and my discipline is excellent once I discover just what it is I have to do.
My Gratitude,
TREESE

Re: SAMBUCCA - ANISETTE - WINE - GF BEER
it takes time... 6-12 months...
the healing journey tends to be a 2 steps forward, 1 step back thing for the first 6-12 months
Progress not perfection is a good motto.

Re: SAMBUCCA - ANISETTE - WINE - GF BEER
Hi Treese,
My consumption of alcohol, like Gabes, is very low. I drink a lot of water and have food when I have alcohol.
1. I am okay with flavored alcohols added to coffee after a meal. (Generally these are flavored alcohols made by my friends and given to me as presents.) I several homemade flavored liquors.
2. I am okay with wine--European style--with food on my belly. I'm okay with a little white wine and
Prosecco with food. I'm probably okay with a small amount of red wine with food. Drinking alcohol as cocktails, American style, before dinner on an empty belly honestly frightens me.
When I drink I'll have a lot of water and have the alcohol with a meal or after eating so that I have a full belly.
3. I've never been a beer drinker.
4. I like the alcoholic ciders like Angry Orchard. They are refreshing in the fall. Usually I'll drink about 1/3 of a bottle, again, with food.
Chin, chin!

Re: SAMBUCCA - ANISETTE - WINE - GF BEER
Treese--I've had a kahlua type of liquor added to espresso and I've also had amaretto. Both were homemade by friends.
Re: SAMBUCCA - ANISETTE - WINE - GF BEER
Treese,
I've also added a splash of the flavored liquor to fresh fruit. It makes for a nice dessert and something different.
