What wonderful news! That will make her rally after this latest trip to the OR! And an hour away...close enough to not go home all the time and feel independant, but close enough to have family there when needed for a visit to or visit home.

There are many sources of funding for colleges. Encourage Kait to work with her guidance department at school, talk to the financial aid folks at the college (even if the monies aren't from the school, they know all about other options out there), state student assistance (usually filed around the same time as taxes), federal student assistance, etc. Much of these monies are in grants and/or scholarships so don't need to be paid back. The sky is the limit for Kait.

Tell her congrats from all of us. College is an exciting time and I'm glad she is getting geared up for it.
Katy

PS: I had a low grade fever while in the hospital after my recent surgery that started going down immediately after going home! I hope Kait's turns around and she is home soon. Much more comfortable recovering in familiar surroundings.

Great news Barb. Things have got to be looking up for her now. I reckon after all Kait has been through she will have the tenacity & be able to do anything that she sets her mind on.

Still keeping everything crossed that she comes through this latest trial OK without any more complications.

That is incredible news!!!! Good for Kait. Believe me any money helps. Mel has been struggling along for so long now, and she is just so tired from working and tyring to go to school. She is doing so much better now that she is in more of her field, fashion, and no science's to worry about. She was getting excellent marks too, but something she had not told me, is that because she did not do well in the science end of her schooling last year, that her funding would only be continued if she passed ALL of her subjects. But last year they only gave her 1500 CDN for her WHOLE YEAR! Her tuition was almost double that, and her books were over a thousand dollars to boot. So she had to work longer hours and more often in order to make up the money for school, and to live. Basically she just gets by, their is never any money for extras. This year they would give her more funding, but she would have to pass all subjects. Since she was doing so well, she didn't think she would have to worry about it. But there was this one teacher, and right from the beginning he told the class that basically he was God and they would have to impress him enough to get a pass. But even though she stayed up without going to bed for something like sleep, so she could go over her final essay, and make sure it was the best she could do, he failed her. She needed at least a 60, and he gave her a final mark of 52, she did not miss assignments, she did everything she could. And with her essay, he slashed it and wrote across it and just tore her to shreds. And she left him messages, and emailed him, asking him if there was anything, anything she could do to make up those 8 marks, as it meant she would not get her funding for this next semester. His responce, was no responce. She when her friends were out partying, she was working. She has been working at two places now, the gym and a bar. I just don't think that it helps kids like her to have to work and go to school too. Your time is so limited. You sacrifice sleep in order to do what you need to do. I am proud of her for being such a hard worker, but she couldn't even spend much time here for Christmas, she had to leave by 4pm, to go to work. I wish they had something more for the kids here. She works so hard, and some of her friends get more funding then she does and they live with their parents. We are not accepting his marking though. She has an appointment with student services, but I wish I had a big winfall and could make it easier for her.

And I think that Kait deserves this break too. After all she has been through, this is just wonderful. Does she have to pay it all back when she is finished school? Or is it a grant? Mel has to pay back any money she does get, which sucks, but is also the only way. Most likely Kait will need more money then that, but if she lives at home and goes to school from there, depending on her tuition fees, and books, it might just do. Mel got only 6000 the first year, tuition and books come off the top, but then she had to make up the rest for living expences. I am not sure if they have this there, and it is only because I am disability myself, but because of that, the government supplements her income with giving her 200.00 dollars a month to help her. But she no longer gets any money from her father, and she will not ask him either. They really are not on speaking terms right now, because of his lack of happiness at her sister being pregnant. But that is another story in itself. LOL

I know here too, if the child wants to, they can get a court of law to force the parent to pay some of the expences. It isn't tested very often though, as if it is at that point where the father is not talking to the child already, usually the child is afraid to go up against the parent in a court to force them to pay. It would also mean bad relations with the said parent for ever after. But I do know about a nephew of my SIL doing just that to his father, and the coart decided in the students favour. But the relationship is forever strained. And I know Mel's father would be that way for sure. He is not even going to help with Amanda's wedding, so that tells you something.

But good luck for Kait, she will finally get the life she deserves, and the people you meet in College end up being life long friends, its where you really get to be an adult and spread your wings.

Huges for Gramma and hugs for Kait

Gentle ones
Wendy
