Budesonide - Temporary Use an Option?

Post by amaguire »

Hello:

I know long shot / non-scientific idea. But is there any experience on taking Budesonide on a temporary basis to counter eating known high inflammation foods?

Reason asking - considering a week long off-grid fishing trip this summer and there's absolutely no way can adhere to current diet (have done trip many times in past know what happens with a bunch of guys in terms of food if you know what I mean).

Background on myself below. Have been following strict very limited diet for past 7 months and am making good progress in symptoms.

Thanks for comments, as always very much appreciate this site!

57 year old male

Remember, this is just my opinion, because these are uncharted waters. Yes, budesonide will help. For most of us, it will cover slight cross-contamination issues and minor food sensitivity exposures that occur when we were eating out. Research shows that restaurants that claim to serve gluten-free food, have, on the average, about a 50% cross-contamination rate on their food. But if you eat at one of those places while taking budesonide, you will probably be okay.

However, it's very unlikely that you will be able to eat whatever you want (in other words, foods containing gluten, soy, casein, etc.), because your EnteroLab scores are relatively high, indicating that you have been reacting to these foods for a long time, and your immune system sensitivity level is probably very high.

I hope this helps.

Will this be your first time taking budesonide? not meaning to be negative to your plan albeit it doesnt always work for everyone.
you may want to consider packing other temporary options in case it doesnt work

The other aspect to consider is the tapering after the holiday, if it works, then you will need to do the taper afterwards.

my thoughts are any medication will help for the occasional meal or small amount of contamination, it won't give you enough protection for every meal all day. Gluten and Dairy are highly inflammatory for everybody (not just those with IBD's). I would avoid these two as much as possible

Another suggestion is that in the lead up to the trip and whilst on the trip, if you are not already taking them, start MC safe Vit D3 magnesium this helps the body moderate inflammation. If you are already taking them, increase the Vit D3 dose the week before, and during the trip away and afterwards to help the body recover.

The other aspect I meant to mention..

quite often the situation and change of mood about being on holidays, change of routine, being with mates doing something you enjoy etc can kind of protect us from major issues, but then when you get home the body reacts

make sure you have supply of safe staples and few meals pre-prepared in the freezer for when you get home
