MC and Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency

Post by Jessica »

I was diagnosed with MC after results from a colonoscopy (couple of weeks ago) and then diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) (Pancreas not producing enough Enzymes to digest food properly and distribute nutrients) the next day from fecal tests. The GI's nurse immediately prescribed Creon (36,000 units 8 X per day). After days of deliberation, and more or less being bullied by medical support advising either take it or face potential mal nutrition, I started taking Creon on 2/14 and now on my 5th day. I do 'feel' better (not so weak), but still having 12-15 bm's per day. The nurse stated the D would immediately cease, but that's not the case.

Tex has advised that this EPI is a result MC / improper diet - I'm now becoming gluten & dairy free. But the weakness and more frequent bm's, along with feeling so sick prompted me to follow the doctor (NP's) advice to address the Pancreatic Enzyme deficiency sooner rather than later. Getting Gluten, Dairy & Soy out of the system seems to take a while - Months ... year?

I don't even have a follow-up visit with the GI until March 2nd to discuss diet and other treatment options. My question is if I continue to work toward the Gluten-Free, Dairy Free, Soy free diet, will this eventually clear up the Pancreatic Insufficiency? I'm now on all of this Creon so not even tried Budesonide? I WANT the diet approach, but don't want mal-nutrition along the way, which is what they tell me I'll have without Creon.

Confused and willing to try anything - jess

I am not knowledgeable with EPI, and I am not a doctor or trained practitioner

if you are following a bland low inflammation eating plan things will improve
clearing gluten can take up to 6 months, most people see improvement within first few weeks of going gluten free.

It is HEALING that takes the time and right environment.

like when you break a bone, you stabilise it and then after 8 weeks first stages of healing are done and then you have to be cautious for a few more weeks
it is a bit the same with the gut, once you remove major triggers, and if you are taking things like Vit D3 and using the topical magnesium healing will start. the other aspect to this is patience, dont push or rush for results. You cant accelerate healing (no matter what the internet says about wonder product for gut health)

like you have found with the topical magnesium - other key nutrients are available as patches or lingually if required.
as I mentioned in the other post re Magnesium, there is a bit of effort to figure out your MC management plan, albeit once you have it sorted, life is easier and less stressful.
