Hi all, I have fairly entrenched Lymphocytic Colitis. I am trying to resolve my symptoms through the diet suggested on this site. In addition to my gastro symptoms and extra-intestinal symptoms (joint pain, neuropathy, and so on), I've had issues with recurrent oral thrush, heartburn, bad breath, sore throat, yellowish tongue, and (occasionally) flat, red lesions on my tongue. I wonder if anyone can give me advice on effective methods of control? The doctors I see prescribe an anti-fungal mouthwash, but that is only effective for a period of time. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Thrush is usually a sign of a Candida albicans overgrowth in the intestines. It's somewhat common among MC patients because the roots of C. abicans can penetrate the epithelia of the intestines, thereby promoting increased intestinal porosity (leaky gut), which can lead to the food sensitivities that perpetuate the inflammation associated with microscopic colitis (MC). I had thrush when my MC symptoms were initially active. Fortunately, the diet changes we recommend for putting MC into remission and keeping it there will also eradicate thrush. C. Albicans feeds on sugar, and significant amounts of sugar typically cause us to react, anyway (until we've been in remission long enough for our intestines to do some significant healing), so we have to minimize sugar in our diet in order to recover from MC. And after we minimize sugar in our diet, the candida will slowly die and fade away.

I hope this helps. Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

Tex

Hi folks,

Where would you start with Vit. C and B12 and Zinc supplementation per day. I’m probably somewhere between flared and remission at the moment following the diet recommended in this site. I’m about 200 lbs.

To treat thrush, you need to minimize carbs, including all sugars. To treat the other symptoms you named, I000 to 2000 mg of vitamin C is the normal recommendation, and that would probably work for vitamin B-12, also. As long as your kidneys are functioning properly there's no upper tolerance limit on B-12, so you shouldn't have to worry about overdosing. Ordinary supplements for B-12 contain cyanocobalamin. Over half of us have MTHFE gene mutations they require us to take the active form of vitamin B12, because our bodies cannot properly methylate the inactive form. The active form of vitamin B12 is methylcobalamin. Many of us take Thorne Laboratories' Methyl Guard, or Methyl Guard Plus, in order to get our B vitamins. For zinc, the usual recommendation for a sore throat is 75-100 mg, divided up into multiple smaller doses during the day.

I hope this helps,

Tex
