Starting on Budesonide tomorrow

Post by Karenoncape »

Hello All,
In a second flare. CC started April 2024, after 1 month of chronic WD got under control x 2 months but did not go GF.
Now
After 1 month of chronic WD, even with GF and recently DF I’ve
Decided to start a course of Budesonide.
GI prescribed 9mg daily x1 month,
6mg daily x1 month then 3mg daily x 1 month.
After reading multiple posts regarding this medication, I’m wondering
if anyone has more suggestions for a slower taper?
Would I need to get more or just use less in the third month, say every other day.
Can you tell if a food is causing symptoms of WD if I haven’t been GF, DF and free of all food triggers
For very long?
Thanks for input,
Karen

Hello Karen,

If the budesonide is effective for you, then it will mask any food reaction symptoms. But if you don't continue the diet, then when the budesonide treatment is ended, you'll relapse (at least around 80% of MC patients do. As for the length of your treatments during tapering, we recommend reducing the dose at the first signs of constipation, rather than by following the calendar. If you can do that, you may or may not have an adequate prescription. If you run short, you may have to ask for a renewal. Often, our GP is willing to make that renewal.

Tex,
Would I reduce dose after the first month when tapering if I got constipation or even before?

Probably the best way to specify this is to take the dose as prescribed, except that If you feel constipated during the treatment (even if it's during the first month), immediately reduce the dose to the next lower level. That way, as long as you're not still having diarrhea when you finish the treatment, by continuing to taper the treatment for a few more weeks, you'll probably be able to remain in remission after you complete the tapering. If you're still having diarrhea after a month or two (during the treatment), then there's probably something in your diet that you shouldn't be eating, or your diet is cross contaminated (or else the budesonide isn't effective for you).
