What Color are your eyes?

Post by starfire »

Hi,
Polly brought up an interesting thing in Christine's post about getting to know each other. She noticed that almost everyone said they had a recessive eye color. Thought I'd try to do a poll for that.

What does "a recessive eye color" mean? I have a guess, but I wanted to make sure. :)

 Hey, I didn't know either. Polly explained that every color except brown is recessive. Kind of makes me feel like I'm kinda backward - LOL.

Hi Shirley. Thanks - great poll. And maybe...just maybe...Polly is on to something. As of right now, 7 people have replied to the poll and all 7 have recessive eye color! It iwll be interesting to see further results, don't you think???

Hey Christine. The only person to ever tell me that I'm full of it was my father. Nice, huh?

Hi Shirley. This poll still intrigues me! I would have expected a much higher percentage of brown versus recessive eye color because brown is a dominant gene.

I tried to find some sort of statistics for the general US population but to no avail. If one parent is brown eyed, that person's eye-color gene would be either BB or Bb (B being dominant brown, b 'blue' or recessive); the other parent could be one of those two or a third possibility, bb (both 'blue' or recessive).

Anyhoo...I hope those with definite CC or LC diagnoses who still haven't taken your poll will do so. If we can get close to 40 votes (that old, magical number for statistical validity) maybe we will have done nothing but have some fun. Or maybe a clue will come to light, such as a possible recessive gene for CC and./or LC. It may seem far-fetched but there are other diseases with a positive correlation to to eye color!

Carrie,
I agree. It does seem that brown eyes should have been the larger percentage and instead it's very low here - at least so far. I hope more people will answer the poll also.

Either brown-eyed people don't like to respond to polls, or MC is linked with recessive eye color. If it's the latter, maybe we can pinpoint the division. Could it be that the brown-eyed ones are not gluten sensitive, for example?

Incidentally, if you get more than 35 responses, the results are suspect, since we only have 36 members, and two of them are me. Also, there are at least several members who do not have MC. The default limit on poll results was 15, which I rased to 25, last week. Just to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to vote in any poll, I raised the limit to 35 today.

Thanks, Tex (can't you please just be Wayne again!) for increasing the number of people who can vote to 35. We can always ask Shirley, later on, to re-do the poll and ask only those with confirmed CC or LC to vote.

As of now, with 18 votes, it's 88% recessive. I think Arlene voted but may not have a confirmed diagnoses yet. If so, and you subtract one from the results, it brings it to 94% recessive.

I sure do find this interesting!

My eyes are very blue and do change from gray to violet, depending upon what I am wearing. Both parents had blue eyes.

Unfortunately it's not a case of brown-eyed people don't have gluten sensitivity because I have brown eyes and do.. BUT.. this is all heredetary.. I wonder WHICH parent I get the gluten sensitivity from? My mom has brown eyes and I pretty much look JUST LIKE HER; HOWEVER, I DO have quite a few of my dad's traits. He has blue eyes and red hair. I have quite a bit of red in my hair (if I ever let the NATURAL color grow out..) and very fair skin like him. A lot of people with gluten sensitivity and colitis also have: acne, dandruff, large pores, etc. I have acne and large pores.. I dunno. I'll keep thinkin.. maybe one of these days I'll get it right.. (as Trent would say)

to Christine,
I should know this but can't remember. Do you have CC or LC? I know you said you're GS but I was wondering about a confirmed MC diagnosis.

BTW I too have a lot of the traits you mentioned in your last message. My teenage years were a nightmare. The good news is that I finally outgrew (?) the acne but was almost 30 by then. Sigh...

Carrie,

OMG I know your pain. I'm STILL very prone to acne. My face still has probably 3 huge zits on it every day of my life. Now of course I can no longer take antibiotics (which I took for 3 yrs prior to developing MLC), so I've had to find OTHER ways.. I tried Proactiv and it's WONDERFUL. If you have kids and they inherit your issues (since you no longer have them), please tell them NOT to buy all the crap they sell at the store and JUST use Proactiv. That stuff could have saved me MANY emotional scars.

Anyway, in answer to your question, I have Microscopic, Lymphocytic Colitis (FUN).. diagnosed by biopsy during colonoscopy in Feb 2004. I have had other colonoscopies since and they found no evidence of disease (yeah, great) so my *new* GI won't really treat me anymore.

Christine, What do you say we start a new thread about skin problems and MC (or skin problems and GS)? Would you like to start the thread?

You're so right about the emotional pain and scars from acne. Do you also have oily skin? I did most of my life until a few years ago. And there's a happy upside to that: my skin now is really nice! All that oil over the years apparently did a great lube job and I have barely any wrinkles!
