New with questions
Hi. I was just diagnosed with MLC a couple of weeks ago. I think I’ve started to recover from about 10 weeks of daily watery diarrhea 6-7 times a day. None for the last week. I have some questions. I think my problem started actually months before but was sporadic and episodic at that point. In June I had a whole meal of Dim Sun for the very first time. (In the past I’ve only had steamed dumplings in a Japanese restaurant). This was a Dim Sun restaurant. One hour later I had horrible stomach cramps and gas with one bm. I was ok the next day. A couple of months later I ate at an Indian food buffet. I have not had Indian cuisine in the past. I got sick that evening with cramps, gas and diarrhea that lasted two days and then I was better. After that from time to time I would have watery diarrhea after having two eggs in the morning but again sporadically. All this culminated in the chronic diarrhea that started sometime in the beginning of December. I have lost 12 pounds. Does it seem likely that the sporadic GI upset from the Dim DunAnd the Indian food was part of the MLC? And if so do you know what the offending trigger was? Incidentally, I was diagnosed by colonoscopy biopsy. Is it typical to be sporadic before it is chronic? Thank you so much for your input.

Hi,
Welcome to the group. We're probably all different in how our MC began, but when mine began, I would have a few days of diarrhea about once a month, and then I would be okay until the next cycle. Since I was delivering feed to various feed stores at the time, and eating at quick food restaurants that happen to be conveniently located about lunchtime, I thought maybe I was either having problems with food poisoning, or I was picking up a virus. But the episodes slowly began to happen more frequently, and just like you, one day the diarrhea started, and wouldn't stop.
Sometimes it's easy to pinpoint the initial cause of the development of the disease, and sometimes it isn't. But in general, it can be triggered by anything that causes chronic inflammation. That can include bacterial infections, or parasites, or certain medications (such as NSAIDs, PPIs, SSRIs, etc.), or even chronic stress caused by things like stopping a long-term smoking habit, major problems at work, losing a job, a death in the family, or losing a favorite pet, etc. Although food sensitivities don't usually trigger the disease, the chronic inflammation causes increased intestinal permeability, and the leaky gut causes us to develop various food sensitivities, which then perpetuate the inflammation, thereby perpetuating the symptoms.
I would guess that it's possible that the inflammation caused by certain foods might possibly contribute to the development of the disease, but I wouldn't suspect that was very likely, because that type of stress is only temporary, not chronic, unless you eat that food every day. MC is usually caused by some source of chronic inflammation.
I hope that's helpful, and again, welcome aboard

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
