Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill
Good morning,
I was wondering if anyone has seen the DVD, "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill?" They are in San Francisco. Mark Bittner has also written a book. I rented the dvd and can't stop watching it. I finally ordered one to buy, an updated version.
I know there are some bird lovers here, and this is the best I have seen!!

Jaco, a parrot in Salzburg, could not only speak but seemed to understand grammar. Whenever his person left, Jaco would say "God be with you." But when several people were departing, Jaco would change it to "God be with all of you."

Kathy,
I saw the film in the theater when it was out. It was very interesting. I loved Mark's curtains, they were chewed to pieces! I keep meaning to read the book.
My Grey just learned to say Uh-Oh and associate it. It was OK when she said in when I dropped something, but now she's busy dropping all of her food and saying Uh-Oh after each piece! I hope the novelty wears off soon or I'll have to go get some more food.
Love, Jean

Hi Kathy!
I read the book and LOVED it. So glad to hear about the DVD - will check it out. Thanks for the tip.
My brother has a parrot named Lucy. What a character! When she wants attention, she will start calling the names of everyone in the house. If no one responds, she will start screeching endlessly. If still no response, then she cries like a human until someone comes. That always gets 'em!

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
I'll have to find this movie. Birds just fascinate me.
I have a cockateil named Sydney who refuses to talk. The only thing he/she will do is whistle - mainly wolf-whistle. You have to answer him and say either "thank you" or "good boy" before he will quit!
I wonder if he is a female since he doesn't talk. He will be 2 in June. Any thoughts?
Would love a parrot!

"Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful." -- Buddha
I'm adding it to my list!!!
I spoke to the person who runs the video rental here for the community - what a laugh - $1.00 per WEEK. With the dollars, they buy more movies/videos/dvd's. Anyway they HAD Winged Migration but it was a video tape and it broke.
I made a $20 donation and asked if they would try to get it again. The woman was astounded. I may have to do the same with "wild parrots".
Thanks for the tip.

Mars,
Some cockatiels talk, but not all. It's more probable for the males, but some females have extensive vocabularies. What color is your bird? If it's a normal grey, you can tell the sex by the cheek patches (male's bright orange, female's muted). I find that the males whistle almost all of the time, but not a sure way to tell. You can get your bird DNA sexed for $20. You send a drop of blood which you get from a toe nail clip.
I'd say at two years, you shouldn't give up hope of your bird talking. I had a cockatiel that talked, but no one could understand it but me. Sometimes cockatiels are better at imitating whistled songs. I've found that once a bird starts to imitate it's human, it picks up things much faster.
Good luck! Jean
