When The Board is unavailable . . . :yikes:

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Many of you probably noticed that the board was unavailable yesterday for a while. I was gone on a short trip, and it was working when I left, and working when I got back , so I wouldn't even have known about the problem if a couple of members hadn't emailed me. The problem was apparently due to a server problem at my internet service provider, (where the discussion board database is hosted). If the server becomes overloaded by too many requests at the same time, or some other technical problem, you will usually get a "critical error" message if you try to access the discussion board. This is known as a "404" error in the trade, and it simply means that the server is not able to access the requested database before it exceeds the timeout limit.

As most of you know, I can't host the board on my own server, because I live out in the boondocks, and highspeed internet connections are not available out here. Sigh.

I usually try to backup the database on wekends, (so that we don't lose all our posts, profiles, etc., due to a server being hacked, crashing, or whatever). That's what I was doing this morning, for example, in case you tried to use the board and got a "closed for maintenance" type of message.

Sometimes I'm able to do this at night, but if someone is using the board, I postpone it until the board appears that it is not being used, and I often wind up having to do it during the daytime, (daytime here in the U S). Since there is a time lag in responses, though, I'm sure that occasionally I may accidentally close the board when someone is using it, and I apologize if that happens to anyone. It's not intentional.

Happy Mothers Day.

Love,
Tex

Hi Tex!

I am sure you already know this, but I wanted to mention to you that I think it is wonderful the hard work you do to have this board as a support system for us. The dedication it takes to keep such a project up and running is truly admirable.

We are truly blessed to have this technology in this day and age to be able to research diseases ourselves and have support systems such as this community to learn from other's experiences. It amazes me sometimes when you get a doctor's negative reaction once they hear you learned something "from the internet", I suppose it could be understandable that it could turn some people into hypochondriacs, but in our case, where things have been medically confirmed with tests, biopsies, etc., I feel the internet is such a lifeline to us when we are trying to learn how to cope. Also, let's face it, there are so many doctors who are not "up to snuff" on the latest research, discoveries with regard to celiac disease or microscopic colitis, sometimes we have to be our own advocates and do our own research!

Sorry to ramble again! I just wanted you to know that your hard work is greatly appreciated.

Hugs.

Karen,

Thank you for your kind words. I have to confess that I've never thought of maintaining this board as hard work. On the contrary, I find it quite enjoyable. What else could it be, when I get to share information and learn new things, with some of the nicest people in the world.

Some doctors do seem to feel insulted when they discover that their patients are seeking information on the internet, but if they were doing a good job themselves, of keeping their patients informed, most of that probably wouldn't be happening. Patients want answers, and some doctors do understand that, and recognize that the more their patients learn about their issues, the better off everyone is, including the doctors. It means that the doctors have to spend less time explaining the basics.

I fully agree with you. For the more rare diseases, especially, such as MC, the internet can be an extremely valuable source of information, since the medical schools don't seem to be training doctors to look for rare diseases, consequently the doctors don't feel that it's worth their time to learn about them. In the case of MC, for example, most GI doctors have heard of it, but precious few have learned the best options for effectively treating it.

Evidently they must feel that celiac sprue is a rare disease also, since the last time I looked, the average length of time to get a correct diagnosis in the United States, is still over 11 years. That's pretty sad.

I think you're right--technology is changing a lot faster than the medical profession is able to utilize that information. Maybe it's just my imagination, but GIs especially, just don't seem to be very open-minded about new information, particularly with regard to diseases caused by food intolerances.

Hugs,
Tex
