non food products containing gluten

I have been lurking around a celiac forum and I notice that people cut out all non food products that contain gluten (shampoo, soap, toothpaste etc) and I wanted to know if it made a different for those who have MC. Can you still use shampoo w/ gluten?

Andrew,
You might be able to use it without any problems, but why risk it? If you accidentally get some in your mouth, you will probably react.
This also applies to envelopes and stamps, which often contain gluten. I always try to use self-sealing envelopes, and self-adhesive stamps. Anytime I have to use the regular gummed kind, I use a moistener, (moisture applicator).

I don't chance it in any way. Especially in the shower, the chances of some dribbling down into my mouth are just too great.
Another thing to keep in mind is those celiacs who have the skin rash DH, they definitely react usually to the "outside" sources, i.e. shampoos, lotions, etc.
I even take care to make sure all soaps, detergents, cleaners are also gluten free.
The best source that is absolutely awesome is the delphi list. Go to
www.delphiforums.com. On the left hand side, click on "Health & Wellness". The first or second forum that comes up is the "Celiac Disease On-Line Support Group", click on that. (You will need to register, but it is free and SOOO worth it!). Scroll down to where you see "Gluten Free Products List", click on that. You will see the list come up in a convenient categorized format, making it incredibly easy when shopping or looking for a particular item to see if it is g/f.
Good Luck!

Karen,
Many thanks for the tip on the GF Products List, over at the Delphi Forum. It's a shame that it requires registration to access, as that would be a great link to add to the "Links" forum, here, for the benefit of newbies.
It's great having a new member so knowledgeable about topics of the sorts that are so dear to our hearts.
We appreciate your input.

Hi Terps!
I agree that to be safe it is best to avoid all known sources of gluten, although some folks are more sensitive than others. Take Jean for example. She is extremely sensitive to gluten and actually had a reaction after being intimate with her partner who had showered with a gluten-containing soap! I'll leave the details to your imagination. LOL!
Love,
Polly
P.S. Hi Karen! Some of us without full-blown celiac disease but an earlier stage of gluten sensitivity get DH. Me for example! (I don't know if you know that!) The itching is intense and SO annoying.

Hi!
The delphi list was my godsend! Shopping is so much easier with that list.
Imagine this: Me a few years ago. Shopping in a grocery store, pushing one cart that has Rhiannon and the boys in it, pulling another cart behind me for the food! Now picture me stopping in the middle of the aisle to read ingredients! It was a nightmare! With that list being categorized the way it is, it saved me from many, many angry glares.......
Another wonderful thing about the delphi site is the recipes. There is a wonderful lady over there named Mirielle, who owns her own gluten free restaurant. She has posted hundreds upon hundreds of g/f recipes under the category "The Best of Mirielle". She is so wonderfully generous to post all of her recipes for us to enjoy......
Have a great day everyone!

And me, Polly. It started in August 2005 when I started my GF diet. It finally vanished... But sometimes I have some reactions (not much), I imagine it is due to a product in the diet with gluten hidden.
With regard to the question of other GF products, I encourage people not to use products with gluten. Why? Because I think our skin takes in much more than we think and it goes straight into our blood.
In fact, I am a member of a GF Spanish Forum (National) and we are starting to recommend it to all Celiacs.
Never heard about a sportsmen passing a test for "dopping" and results were positive after only having used an ointment?
I would rather prefer avoiding Gluten products (not only the ones I eat or drink). We never know.
Furthermore, it is a way to avoid getting a DH.
Love,
Tessa
