Medical science has failed someone again :o(

Post by CAMary »

A family friend has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. She is 42 years old and has 14-month old twins :o( She found the lump herself (size of a walnut) but had 2 months previously had a mammogram in which nothing was noted   So she had assumed it was a cyst or something....I guess a mammogram is only as good as the person who evaluates it :banghead:

Anyways they think it had been present for quite some time, but since it is reactive to hormones (?) they think going through IVF and her pregnancy really allowed it to "take off". They are treating her with aggressive chemo - like my mom says "hoping to buy some time so her children will at least have some memories of her". It has metastasized to the bone and the liver, so obviously the prognosis is not at all good.

My aunt's cancer followed a similar course...it seems like they could come up with a better diagnostic tool than mammograms - which I'm starting to think are not that great...How heartbreaking to have someone look at your films of past mammograms and admit - "yeah, we missed it"

Please keep Cindy, her husband and 2 young sons in your prayers...

Thanks!

Mary

Mary,

My heart really goes out to her! My Mom's doc (oncologist) admitted that even after performing her lumpectomy, he couldn't distinguish it on her mammogram. Fortunately for my Mom her GP was very astute and saw a change in shape of her breast (concave in) and sent her for the biopsy. Her's had not spread. There does have to be a better way....

I will hope for a miracle similar to one a classmate (almost...2 years ahead of me) had...she had breast cancer young (mid 20s). She was to a point of almost dying (aka, the family had been called in). She rallied, and just recently gave birth to a daughter she thought she'd never have.

Have hope, faith, and best wishes to your friend. I hope the joy of her sons gives her enough strength to fight this.

I'm so sorry, Mary. It must have been there quite a while for it to get that big. And they say Mamo can detect them before you can feel them. Sure didn't work or her. That is so sad.

There is a better diagnostic tool than the old mammogram.. BUT it is very expensive and most insurance won't cover it unless there is a compelling reason to.

You can bet if it were men's "pee pees" being tested ...the better test would be covered in full... no questions asked...!!!!

The name of the other test eludes me.. obviously my ins. co doesn't cover it either

That is heartbreaking. As a 43 yr old mother of four children, including twin boys, that hits a bit too close to home. My prayers are being sent their way.....

Granny, you are so right! Can you imagine if men had to put their "pee pee's" in the mammogram machine and get it crushed? :yikes:

You betcha. If men had to do it, there would be a much better test developed by now!
