some of my medications have lactose in them/ GFDF diet

Post by thedell19 »

My ativan and wellbutrin both have lactose in them but no other dairy ingredient. Would you think by taking them it would significantly delay my progress of healing of my diet? None of my meds have gluten
Dr Fine test shows positive for gluten and casien but negative for soy, eggs, and yeast
Maybe its UC maybe its MC? Who knows at this point, but at least I know my intollerances now... so heres to the road to healing!

Good question. The answer probably depends on whether or not your duodenum has enough damage to the villi and the brush border areas to interrupt your lactase production. Do you know if you have a known celiac gene? If you have, I would guess that you would be more likely to have acrued some damage there. I looked at the Enterolab Results for HLA-DQ Gene Molecular Analysis post in the "Polls" forum, but didn't see your gene test results listed, so I don't know if you have even had a gene analysis done.

Taking one of the lactase supplements, (like lactaid, for example), might preempt any problem, as long as the supplement didn't cause any propblems of it's own. If you react to the lactose, it would definitely delay the healing process. Some people who are lactose intolerant, however, don't react to the small amounts that are usually found in most meds.

It's possible to have meds custom formulated by a compounding pharmacy, in order to avoid intolerances, but you would need a script from your doc, in order to have that done.

And there was no damage to the intestines shown on the Enterolab tests.

LOL. I probably did comment on it, but don't forget that I am a victim of CRS, at times. When I get time, I'll do a search and see if I can locate that info, and add it to the thread that I mentioned.

I was thinking that you did, but I was afraid to stick my neck out and say so, without reviewing your test results.

Thanks. I added the gene information to the other thread, to make it easy to find, the next time someone needs it.

A ndrew,
I sometimes worry about the probable minute quantities of lactose in my medications but have decided that the medication benefits outweigh the intolerance risk.

The first med I tired after my MC DX was Asacol and it made awfully sick- all my symptoms just raged. If I'm not mistaken, I think it has some sort of dairy in it as well. I then tried Sulfaslazine and had a hard time with that as well. Anyone know what's in these meds?

I now know I don't tolerate lactose or casein from diet trials and I believe that my system was so messed up at the time I introduced those meds early on that they just sent me over the edge. Maybe now, that my gut has healed I might be able to take them without a problem. I dunno, but I often wonder why I reacted so badly to Asacol and many folks can take it with no problem.

I guess if your not having a reaction or problem taking a med it might be okay for you. Like m said, the benefits may outweigh the cons. Your taking Asacol arn't you Andrew and not having any problems?

Love,
Joanna

Joana-

I do believe both asacol and sulfazine have lactose in them. But I do believe the amounts are so minimal (Gi said that when I questioned asacol in the begining b/c it had lactose in them). But your guess is as good as mine!
