Has Anyone Experienced This?

Post by cludwig »

Hi Everyone

I was reading about adrenal stress and I came across this information that says with stressful situations that levels of slgA decrease. Segretory igA protects the gut from pathogenic material. Chronic cortisol elevation may be associated with high antigliadin antibodies (the protein found in wheat) due to intestinal hyperpermeability.

I know my adrenal stress profile was not normal and am wondering if this could be partly responsible for my slow healing. Also, I can't imagine anyone going through this illness and not having elevated stress....so it could be a factor for all of us.

I thought this was interesting...or have you guys heard this before?

Thanks,
Cristi

Hi Cristi,

This is interesting. I'd love to read the entire article if you can post it or send it to Tex to do so for you, if he would.

I suppose that you've heard about all the things that Dr. Fasano is doing with zonulin research. Zonulin is responsible for controlling the permeability of the gut, and it's been discovered that people with celiac disease, and possible others with related diseases, like us, have elevated zonulin levels.
Dr. Fasano has discovered something that will block zonulin and eventually be made into a medication. Are you aware of this?

I'll have to think a bit more when awake about the lower IgA levels under stress. I do know that some folks don't have normal IgA levels and think this is not uncommon among celiacs, as a matter of fact.

Yours, Luce

Cristi,

That theory would certainly fit with my onset of this disease.

Hi Luce and Shirley,

You can find this info when you google ...Metametrix adrenal stress. It will be under the second topic listed and will say...metametrix clinician info. If this doesn't work for you ....tell me ....because while I'm not a computer person....my husband is and I can have him get better directions.

But I found this to be incredably interesting...whether it is one of the triggers of MC, or if it prevents some of us from healing from it when we get it. And if we weren't stressed before we got it ,I can't imagine anyone living with this stuff not becoming stressed.

I should be starting treatment for adrenal fatigue this week...so I'll let you know how it goes.

thanks,
Cristi

I have just one word to ADD (well 2 -- )---which I also believe played a major part with starting my MCC--

STRESS__STRESS and more STRESS for many years---PLUS a retired GP that had me on anti-biotics ---for an AILMENT that I didnt have---!!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

And I would be very interested in your updating us with the treatment for adrenal fatigue
So please do keep us informed---
Many thanks Cristi

Cristi,

That's a very interesting site. It appears to accurately describe what's wrong with me. LOL. A little more checking turned up this site, which offers much more detail. This individual is, of course, selling tests, which raises a huge red flag, however, the information appears to be quite relevant.

A condition of chronic cortisol elevation seems to have far reaching effects, and this explains a lot of issues. This issue begs for further study, I believe.

Metametrix is a reliable lab so I trust the information they provide.

I had my adrenal stress profile done at Genova Diagnostics (formerly Great Smokies Diagnostic Labs). They provide references within the articles they provide on conditions related to their tests, so it's easier to review the original research if you wish, at least what's available to the public. Their website is also chock full of helpful information.

Metametrix is a great place to have an RBC Nutrient Analysis if you want to check your minteral levels. I had one done there showing low levels, so I knew it would be helpful to supplement. I just had a second one done to check on my progress and will have the results soon.

Dr. Wilson has an entire chapter on food intolerance in his book on Adrenal Fatigue because the two are so interconnected! Dr. Wilson is THE expert on Adrenal Fatigue according to my integrative medicine doctor!

I know that stress and adrenal fatigue is one factor in my illness. I've had a stressful life for many, many years and wore my adrenals down. By the time I took the adrenal test in the Spring of 2005, the line that tracks the cortisol level on the chart was almost flat on the low end whereas it's supposed to start out higher in the morning and slowly decline through the day and evening.

However, I believe that any chronic complex illness is multifactoral. I don't think there is any one single cause. In my case I know that both stress and elevated heavy metals were in play and I believe the trigger was a virus or a bacteria since the downslide began with a dramatic gastrointestinal event.

Treating the adrenal stress did help a lot though! My treatment program from my naturopath has focused on treating the adrenal fatigue, reducing the heavy metals, supporting the immune and gastrointestinal systems, purging the h. pylori, etc. It is definitely "wholistic."

I was just thinking yesterday how good I am feeling these days in comparison to 2004 and 2005. I've still had some obstacles to getting well - the h. pylori and some dry symptoms but that's nothing compared to the systemic degeneration I was experiencing before.

Many people may not have such widespread damage so simply going gluten and other trigger free may be enough for them. Personally, I needed a comprehensive program to get well.

All the best, Celia

Celia,

I wasn't questioning the integrity of the lab, with my remarks about selling tests, I was referring to the nutritionist's site, for which I posted the url.

I have a hunch that the hormonal issue that adrenal fatigue causes, is a prime factor in the genesis of all the other autoimmune issues that so many of us tend to develop. It may well be a common link. We tend to blame these other autoimmune disease problems on a corrupt immune system, but the immune system has to have a reason to react, and the hormonal issues initiated by adrenal fatigue may well be the reason, or at least one of the primary reasons, why it reacts to trigger these various diseases.

I think there's more to this than meets the eye.

BTW, I don't want to sound like I am dismissing the power of a gluten-free diet, Cristi. The gluten free diet will go a long way toward taking stress off the adrenal system as well as staying away from other food triggers! Celia

Tex, Oh, I misunderstood you. I think it's good to be slightly skeptical anyway. But since I am familiar with the lab, just wanted to share my knowledge of it. Celia

Hi Everyone

I met with my naturopath and doctor. I'm going to have an iodine uptake test next week and an ACTH stimulation test which will see if it's my adrenal glands not functioning properly or if it's a problem elsewhere causing the problem. I got the results back from a urine organic acid test. The only weird thing from that was an elavated seratonin turnover. I'm not really sure what that means.

MY cortisol is low ...doesn't start out high like normal....then spikes around ten o'clock to above normal....then gets low again. My DHEA is very low. I just started taking DHEA and pregnenolone today...it's a cream from a compounding pharmacy. So, I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks,
Cristi

Cristi,

I'm glad you are getting the help that you need. That's interesting about the serotonin. Isn't serotonin one of the neural transmitters that is produced primarily in the gut? It is....

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT) is a monoamine neurotransmitter synthesised in serotonergic neurons in the central nervous system and enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract. (from Wikipedia).

Did you have a chance to go over the organic acids test with your naturopath? Depending on how experienced she is with these types of tests, she has the option to call the lab and speak with a clinician to get help in interpreting the test.

I never took the organic acids test myself, but my husband did. I'm glad it came back so well. My hunch is that the serotonin turnover might have to do with the MC affecting your gut and hence the production of serotonin...but it's only an uneducated guess.

Serotonin plays a big role in anxiety, depression, and sleep---

In the central nervous system, serotonin is believed to play an important role in the regulation of mood, sleep, emesis (vomiting), sexuality and appetite. Serotonin has been thought to play a part in many disorders, notably as part of the biochemistry of depression, migraine, bipolar disorder and anxiety.

Glad you are getting some good information! Hugs, Celia

Hi Celia,

MY naturopath had just received the results when I got there so she hadn't had time to dig in to it. She's a good investigater ..so I'm sure she'll have more info the next time I see her. It's interesting though that 4 or 5 months ago my doctor had me try effector(sp?), an SSRI , and I had a violent allergic reaction to it. The test results said the seratonin could be explained if I was taking an SSRI which I'm not. It would make sense to me that it is related somehow to the MC.

Thanks Celia,

Hi,

I forgot to mention that my naturopath thought that the high seratonin could be related to all the poultry that I'm eating and asked if I could stop eating it. I laughed out loud as I don't know what else to eat.

I've also been looking at the organic acid test more and there is one bacteria that is really high. It mentions a probiotic to help...didn't tolerate that well when I tried it..but maybe I just need to try a different brand.

Thanks for your input,

Cristi
