Blogs, podcasts and wikis
I just finished reading a professional newsletter on the growing impact of blogs, podcasts and wikis on my profession. I feel so dumb. I have just barely a grasp of what these things are. Does anyone else feel that way? m
Hi Melissa,
Well, I know what they are, but I don't use them, and I don't feel particularly dumb, just because I don't use them. They're just alternative ways to exchange information. To each his or her own.
We do some of that in this forum, we just don't call it a blog.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Iam alot like Sally these days.......I haven't used an ATM in I don't know how long. I feel a bit dumber every year there is something new. Sally is right, between us all, we know everything, I'd just like to have all the combines knowledge in my head. But alas I would still just be a little old lady. I saw a picture of myself the other day someone else had taken and realized just how old I am begining to look. Love Oma
May I be more compassionate and loving than yeterday*and be able to spot the idiots in advance
Isn't a wiki some kind of online encyclopedia? I have no idea why it's called a "wiki" though.
A blog is a website that an individual uses to express his or her opinions. They can get quite argumentative.
I'll go look up podcast.
Love, Sally
"Podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio programs or music videos, over the Internet using either the RSS or Atom syndication formats, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. The term podcast, like 'radio', can mean both the content and the method of delivery. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster. Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their files; a podcast however is distinguished by its ability to be downloaded automatically using software capable of reading RSS or Atom feeds."
Aren't you glad you asked?????? :-)

If there is any interest, I can easily add both RSS and Atom syndication to this bulletin board.
Would anyone use it if I added it?
Love,

Luce,
Basically, RSS and Atom syndication provide a way to automatically find and list the headlines of breaking news stories. Additional details can be viewed, if desired.

Unless of course, it could filter for only those news items related to say, MC, gluten and/or other food intolerances, and other digestive issues.
I have no clue how this works...so understand that with my note above...I don't even know if you can filter these things.
I also feel more out of touch every day. But at the same time, at least I know how to cope with DOS based computer programs, I know what Fortran is/was. Kids coming out of school now have a very difficult time if its not windows based. And because the Civil Engineering world has lots of really good software that hasn't been upgraded to a windows environment, we still use the old stuff quite a bit. But we are making some progress. Down side of being largely involved with public projects...not enough money goes in to keeping with the times. We are probably lucky we aren't still dependant on mainframes and punch cards.

Katy,
If I understand it correctly, you select the news feeds that you want, (IOW, medical, for example), and the headlines from that source, (or sources), will appear in a post, (or posts), in the forum, (or forums), of your choice, as they are issued. If you want to see more detail, you just click on the news headline. At least that's the way I think it works.
You select these options in a form on this discussion board, and it cranks out an URL that you copy and paste into your newsreader, in your browser, to complete the circuit. You select the news feeds you want in your browser, and they appear on the board, but are visable only to you. IOW, your browser allows them to be fed into the forum, (or forums) that you select, (but only on your own computer).
If you don't set up your account for any newsfeeds, then it's just like sound in a forest--no one sees or hears it. Only you will see your newsfeed selections--no one else can see them, in fact, they won't even know you're receiving them.
There are a lot of feed sources available, these days.

Katy,
You are making me feel old with the comment about the punch cards! Ha!
I'll have ya know we put a man on the moon with those things!
Well, he didn't take 'em with him.
Shucks, you know what I mean!
I even remember Fortran. Funny, but the less user friendsly a computer is, the more I know about it. Somehow I just lost track of progress. Webtv is supposed to be for old people. Grrrr!
Anything you want to do, Wayne, I'm a news junky who doesn't have time to keep up with the news, so every little bit helps.
Right now, I'm trying to follow this storm, Chris, in the Atlantic, and make plans for travel with Mom again, sooo... This is news I HAVE to follow, like it or not.
Wow, I am sooo behind the times!
Thanks, Wayne.
Yours, Luce

Yep, Fortran was my first "real" computer language, too, (other than machine language and assembly language, but I never wrote any worthwhile programs in machine language or assembly language).
Okay, I installed the code to do this. When I get some free time, I'll play with it and see what it takes to make it work right, and what it will do.
