My Good Deed
I wasn't planning to post this but I just HAVE to share it. It made me feel so good.
I went out on the porch to hang up some clothes to dry (we live out in the sticks so I can do that - no sub-division or "community" with rules)
I saw a lovely butterfly caught in a spider web. It wasn't moving so I thought it was dead but I wanted a better look so I released it from the web. It grabbed onto my finger and moved it's wings a bit. I finished cleaning it off and it just stayed on my finger. It's wings were a bit ragged around the edges from struggling in the web.
I just held it for a while, then I tried to coax it onto a petunia blossom. It wouldn't budge. I started to touch it again because I saw some web material hanging from one of it's antenna and it hopped up onto the finger of my other hand. It sat there for a few seconds and then flew away.

VERY KEWL! But watch out...that spider is probably pretty upset right about now...broken web AND no dinner
Butterflies are wonderful creatures for sure.
My mom got a wonderful photograph of one on a flower (pink butterfly on pink flower). She had it blown up to frame and all. Well when she got the enlarged version, she realized that the butterfly was being eaten by a spider! Needless to say that pic is not on her wall.

Shirley!
That is just so cool! I love butterflies since they were my mother's favorite - I have a soft spot for them and they remind me of my mom every time I see one! You're the best!
Last year we had the most beautiful creature fluttering around my Iris. I looked and looked for what it was and didn't find out until this year - purely by accident.
It was a "soft-looking" (powdery) white with antenna and a fat body. It looked like a butterfly but flapped it's wings like a hummingbird! I was so excited and ran into the house to find the camera! When I came out it was gone.
I found out it was a hummbingbird moth! Spectacular! Haven't seen one since!

Kate,
I know your Mom was just sooooo disappointed when she saw the enlargement of that picture. She just hated it I'm sure!!
Barb,
I love butterflies too. Have you ever visited a Butterfly House like at Calloway Gardens or someplace like that. It is so cool.
Oma,
You're right - who cares about that old spider I haven't been able to gather up much sympathy for those guys.
Polly,
The butterfly was mostly a med to light brown with an "eye" on each wing. It had lighter colored areas especially around the edges of the wings - almost an off white. The poor wings were pretty tattered but it didn't seem to have any trouble flying.
I tried to find a picture of it on the internet but no luck. It's body was kinda short and plump but it was at least 2 1/2 - 3 inches across the wing span. I suppose it could have been some kind of moth but it was lovely just the same.
Glad we have lots of Nature lovers here.
Love, Shirley

Awwww
But wait - the poor spidey! Whatever will he do for dinner? Have ye no sympathy????
Seriously, all spidies should look like this * <----if you count carefully that's only six legs - the other two are splatted underneath!!!!!
Arachnophobic (and totally irrational when it comes to spidies)
