Cooking shows on tv

Post by Lucy »

Hi all,

Since I've been over here, I have access to cable, and the Food Network.
Before, I was only able to see the programs on PBS which we've always enjoyed.

I'm just curious as to which of the cooking programs each of you finds helpful, particularly those of you on restricted diets??

Luce,

I don't watch any cooking channels, they are not available through the limited cable package that we have.

It's great to hear from you and please give us all an update on how your Mom is doing and how things are going. Keeping you close in my prayers.

Love,

I second what you said, Joanna, about the updates.

Sorry Luce, I almost never watch cooking shows but what little I've seen, I kinda enjoy Rachel (no idea of her last name or the name of her show), but I haven't really noticed if she cooks things suitable to restricted diets.

Luce-

I enjoy 30 minute meals with Rachael Ray. She cooks pretty simple meals and often discusses ways to modify/substitute. I can adapt pretty much all of her meals so that I can eat them. She doesn't use complicated procedures or fancy ingredients, either...I don't watch any of the others regularly, so I can't give any more recommendations - but there are other good segments as well, I am sure!

With your scientific background, I'll bet you'd enjoy Alton Brown's Good Eats. It's on at 7pm weekdays. It's a bit cheesy, but he does the science behind cooking (and therefore, helpful hints on when to simmer, vs. boil, vs. whatever else).

We also watch Iron Chef a lot. More for flavor ideas. Many of the savory dishes they make are gf...mostly meat and veggies or fruit.

And although I can't eat cake, Ace of Cakes is just amazing to see what people can do to decorate a cake.

Rachel Ray is good too.

OK you guys!

Please put any great recipes and cooking tips in our forum. Would love to hear about ways to modify dishes or to add flavor.

Love,

Polly

Polly, That is the best part of the food network...they do so much with flavor...add a sprig of this, add a touch of that. For recipies, try www.foodnetwork.com

Katy (who is off to start some chicken stock from last night's carcass and some chicken soup for the week).

Hi friends,

Thanks for the smart ideas. You know, I have seen Rachel everywhere I turn, but not Alton, and only the Iron Chef in passing.
Have a very difficult time sitting through an entire recipe/meal prep on one of those programs due to patient's needs. I really need to video tape some of these -- you know, push the button if something sounds like a good match.

Have a new book I found today at a Barnes and Nobles. Will make a new post for it, if I get to it.
I don't get the responses to my posts unless I make it back home from my sister's where we're caring for Mom, so glad I saw these responses today. I do get to look at the site and post from there on my sister's laptop, fortunately, but not all that often, as she brings it home for her work she has to do.

Thanks for the prayers. Mom still gets confused as to where she is, but things remind her. For instance, when her hairdresser came by after work, she insisted on taking Mom outside in the wheelchair (not an easy thing to do like it was here, by the way).

Anyway, Mom's regular yard guy was over there (instead of here where she would normally see him) in the back yard with his big black lab that Mom loves.

Now, you would think that the yard guy (he fusses over Mom too) and the dog being in the wrong back yard would confuse her more, but when she saw Jerome and Chance, she exclaimed outloud, "OH, we're at Kay and Tom's house!"

She frequently forgets where she is, and thinks she's in the hospital, largely due, I think, to the fact that she sleeps in a hospital bed since coming home from the hospital in October, and it's over there.

Thanks again, so much! Now to post about the book I found before it gets too late. We're expecting the ice age to descend upon us any day now. It's been a while since we've been iced over this near the coast.

Yours, Luce

Katy,

I went to the food network URL and became engrossed in a video of a chef making chicken stew. It looked so good I went right to the store and made it for dinner last night. It was excellent!! Thanks for that reference.

Love,

Polly
