5th day, still feeling sick -any advice appreciated

Post by thedell19 »

So I was starting to feel half way okay yesterday, and then I woke up in the middle of the night with that sick feeling- I cant really describe it but it feels like I am having an out of body experience and I am not there but I am- and then I start to get verry worried.

This morning I had very soft serve like stools.

Took my temperature- 98 so normal.

I am wondering if this was a glutening how long will the effects last? I am thinking about making a call to my GI tomorrow if things are not cooled down. Tried to get a regular Dr apt Friday and Saturday thru walk-in apt but no such luck- and if I had any luck at all I picked up something there.

Basically how do I tell if this is from gluten or that I am just sick? Hell of a bug if I am sick.

Food yesterday- Breakfast cream of rice cereal- no syrup.
Lunch- Leftover homemade chicken and rice soup
Snach- little broth and a piece of banana bread
Dinner- More soup, small piece of bread
Snack- small serving of organic GF french fries
Dr Fine test shows positive for gluten and casien but negative for soy, eggs, and yeast
Maybe its UC maybe its MC? Who knows at this point, but at least I know my intollerances now... so heres to the road to healing!

Andrew----is it like a feeling of being *spacey*???

Cus when I start to have an anxiety attack---thats how I feel and then the awful feeling scares the hell outer ya---and YES---with me it does cause me some loose movements---

These attacks just pop~~~and again--with me---they sometimes last for a couple of hours and I then hit the bed and just try to relax--

I cant answer about gluten----I dont have that issue--

Do hope U are feeling better--

Andrew,

Sorry to see that you're still having problems. That's the pits.

I'm not sure that it's always possible to tell the difference between a reaction, and a "bug" of some sort. The lack of fever, though, suggests that it might be an MC reaction.

Hi Terps!

For me, the biggest clue that I've been glutened is that feeling that you describe - where you feel like you're not really there - that you could fade out at any minute, and the anxiety that then goes with it (increased heartrate, etc.). Years ago, when I first went GF, it could take days, even weeks, to get over a gluten attack. Now it is much less time - hours to a day or two at most - often with just a softer than normal BM and not watery diarrhea. I hope this helps.

Take care and feel better SOON,

Polly

Wow! I really feel for you. In the first couple of weeks being gluten free instead of waking up relaxed and ready for I new day I woke up feeling anxious . Very disconcerting and to say the least humbling. IMHO it has to do with the body getting rid of the gluten antibodies and withdrawal from carbohydrate addiction.

A few tips that worked for me and I hope will give some insights to you and anyone else with the same problem .

Hydration- Even though I did not have D big time after a certain point I began to suspect that that the “soft serve poops” were still keeping me dehydrated, just not as much as before. If I had known about home made electrolyte recipes at the time I would have been much further ahead than using the store bought varieties that have lots of dyes and sugar. Dehydration made me feel much the same way as you have described.

Exercise- I know you are really busy with work since it is the tax season.
I have no idea how much you exercise. When one is really busy it is easy to blow it off. I found and still find that if I have been glutened that a good brisk fifteen minute walk every day can do wonders . It really increases metabolism, gets blood flowing and helps get rid of the gluten antibodies. If you can make it more, its even better. Build up to at least an hour. I know , I know their just isn’t time. I always have to ask myself if their is time not to do it?

Carbohydrate Addiction- Eliminating gluten results in in a huge loss of carbohydrates from the diet and can result in having many of the symptoms you have mentioned. It takes a while to get used to it. Seeing what you have eaten reminds me of how I found in the early stages of recovery that I had to eat some animal protein at every meal in order to keep my blood sugar stable. I was so addicted to carbohydrates that when I reduced them so suddenly and so drastically and did not make it up with something more stable I had many of the same symptoms you have had. Eating the gluten free breads and things like gluten free french fries just made it worse.

The good news is that if you are anything like me and many others here once you get past the dehydration , carbohydrate addiction and stabilize blood sugar it just gets better and better.

To your continued recovery.

Thanks guys!

Barbara- I do get panic/anxiety attacks and take .5 mg of ativan a day to combat those things- but still I get anxiety... We just got a puppy this weekend and he was wining last night at about 1am and I went out to comfort him (his first night in our house) and I guess that brought on some anxiety.

Polly- Good to know that the gluten attacks dont last as long as you get further out in the diet. Now that I think about it- I was at a friends house a week ago today (sunday) and I made some chicken on a pan instead of tin foil b/c they didnt have any- so possible gluten from that and like you said could last a week.

Mathew- I see your point about starving ourselves of carbs at first- I do try and eat animal protien at every meal (breakfast I usually have an egg and bacon and muffin- lunch have some kind of meat either loftover dinner or broiled chicken and dinner more meat or fish. I just bought a protien powder (brown rice protien, rice bran, and something else but it is nothing that I would react to) but have yet to find a good way to drink it so I want to try and put it in scrammbled eggs etc. I do drink gatorade so I dont worry so much about my electrode levels--

thanks again for your advice- I guess I just have to stick it out- Done it before and I'll do it again. Off to bed!!

Terps

The only protein I see here is what little is in the chicken soup. All the rest are carbs.

Really my friend. It has to be every day for it to work

Hiya Terps.

Just a thought........keep an eye on the rice powder. I find that sometimes, even though I can tolerate a food, it gives me trouble if it is in a concentrated form or if I eat too much of it.

It sure could have been the pan. I was being glutened some time ago and traced it to the fact that my son was cooking those noodle packs (ramen) and then not washing out the pan before putting it back. He now has a dedicated pan. Also, I throw out old bread/crackers, etc. for the birds and have gotten glutened if I did not wash my hands afterwards. You haven't been licking envelopes, have you?

A new puppy! I want to hear about it!

Love,

Polly

Mathew- Well the past few days I didnt feel like eating a thing- the chicken broth soup had real pieces of chicken in it so over the course of that day I probably had 1 1/2 chicken breasts.

Polly- I guess I just have to be more careful! And I make my wife lick the envelopes and then I dont go near here for a few hours! I will post some pictures of him tonight when I get home either in this link or one for himself- oh yeah we are open to names as well!

Yeah we decided to get a dog to practice for kids...

So I cleaned my work area yesterday with Lysol Sanitizing Wipes... would that get the gluten off of the keyboard etc?

HAHAHAHAHA! I like JJ's names for the puppy! But your wife may not! What kind of dog? What does he look like? I have to know more about him in order to suggest a name.

I'm sure those wipes would remove gluten. Good idea.

Love,

Polly

I like poopie puppy! HA HA. When I worked at an animal hospital in HS, I was working alone one Saturday night cleaning kennels and doing evening meds/food. While I was out in the runs cleaning, I heard a lot of whimpering. Found 8 puppies that had been dropped off in the lawn outside. I took them in and had only our "emergency cage" to put them in...the one that we didn't fill with boarders in case an emergency medical case came in. Let me tell you, trying to clean up 8 puppies and the cage the next morning after they had pooped all night! UGH!

He is 25% golden retriever and 75% poodle to cut down on the shedding- He is light in color (mix between golden and white)

I know my wife posted his pics somewheres- I will ask her for the link and post it here

He has not pooed in his cage yet- a couple times peeing- but he is rather good about going outside (most of the time) and the rest of the time we think he is marking his territory- I would whathe would do if I started to mark my territory
