Oma Called Me Yesterday Afternoon
Hi All,
Oma called me to ask me to post an explanation of why she is off-line, (and will probably remain off-line for some time to come). Her computer has been diagnosed with a dead motherboard, which means that the repairs would probably cost more than it is worth. Since she and Mike are still trying to recover from the financial crisis they had about a year ago, repairing the computer, or buying a new one, (which I think would be a better choice), will have to be put on hold, until their financial situation improves.
She certainly didn't ask for any help, but I'm wondering if enough people are interested in helping to get her back online, that we could buy her a new computer, and send it to her. I know for a fact that if I had to live without a computer, it would drive me up the wall. I would be worse than a drug addict trying to kick the habit.
Good computers aren't terribly expensive these days, so it wouldn't exactly take an arm and a leg to buy a machine for her. If anyone is interested, I'm willing to chip in a hundred dollars to get the ball rolling. Any opinions, or suggestions?
Love,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Morning Barbara,
No, no, you don't need to contribute that much. I just put up a hundred bucks because it was my idea, and I didn't want to be like all the zillionare movie stars who are always promoting some worthy cause, but they expect everyone else to contribute all the money, and all they contribute is their endorsement, and maybe about as much money as they earn in 10 or 15 minutes.
I'm glad to see that you're in favor of doing this. If enough people are willing to help, though, we should be able to get by with much smaller amounts, per person. Thanks, dear friend.
Luve,
Galahad

Hi Tex,
I am in for $50 but am going to talk with a couple of people here. We just shut down an office and I am not sure if they are going to use all the hardware that came back here or if they have pre-sold it. Will keep you posted but my $50 is in.
Love, Maggie

Kathy,
That's a possibility. I've got a number of old computers myself, but I still use the ones that are usable, for special, (dedicated), purposes, and the ones that I abandon, have major problems, (like a bad motherboard), so they're not worth repairing, even though I do my own service work.
The main problem with the older machines, is that they're not nearly as user friendly as the newer ones, and the price of service work is prohibitive, to my way of thinking, compared with the value of the computer. Personally, if I can't justify repairing it myself, and it's out of warranty, I'll throw it away, before I spend the price of a new computer on an old one, with obsolete technology.
We'll play it by ear, here, and see what develops. I notice the new computers are shipping with Windows Vista, now. That's a big step forward, in usability.
