I was in a GNC store yesterday and picked up a copy of a magazine they sponser called "Let's Live". I was just thumbing through it and found an "Editor's Letter" titled "Grain Danger" in which she talks about the many varied health problems caused by gluten sensitivity.

Quote: "Today, celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder centered in the gastrointestinal traack, affects at least 1 of every 133 Americans. But Gluten sensitivity affects nearly 3 out of every 10".

She didn't say where she got her statistics, but she also was promoting a book called "The Gluten Connection" by Shari Lieberman (Rodale, 2007).

I haven't read it yet, but there is also an article in the mag titled "Gluten-Free Living. At the end of the article it states: "Melissa Diane Smith is a Tucson, Arizona based nutritionist who specializes in sugar and grain related health conditionsand counsels clients around the country."

Just thought it was interesting that the gluten sensitivity problem seems to be getting more "press".

I tried to find the articles on the "net" but I don't think they publish them.

Wow, that's high but not surprising in light of what you mentioned - gluten sensitivity is getting lot's more press in recent months, more on the internet too. I'm learning alot.

So, what do you all think? In the wide spectrum of gluten related health problems are those of us with microscopic colitis gluten intolerant or would we more likely fall under the gluten sensitivity catagory?

This is a very interesting new site, still under contruction but looks promising.

I'm not sure how to answer your question, Joanna. I haven't done nearly as much research as you.

Just on "gut feeling" - I think we can fall into either category, but perhaps the "sensitive" ones will develop into "intolerant", especially if gluten is not removed from the diet.

I thought that the terms "gluten intolerant", and "gluten sensitive" were interchangeable. I usually think of them that way, anyway.
