Tex and or Birders I have a question

We have two different nests on our property in trees. They look like a grass ( appears to made of twigs and grass)egg shape about 10 in tall and 6in or so around with a hole to enter in the upper half of the egg shape. Haven't seen a bird enter yet, but wondered if anyone knew what kind of nest that was. Love Oma

Hi Oma,

I've seen a few nests like that, over the years, but like you, I don't recall ever seeing the birds using them, so I'll leave your question to someone who knows what's what in the world of bird's nests.

Sounds like an oriel nest. Of course Maggie will give you a better/more trustworthy confirmation!

Katy - very much in agreement on it more than likely being an Oriel's nest. However, without seeing it that is just an educated guess. Will do some research and if I find another suggestion, I will let you know.

Thanks family...it just has us curious. This is the first year we have seen them here on our property. It really has hubby preplexed. They just look like an egg made of sticks twigs and grassey stuff mostley twigs and woven into an egg with one hole to enter and exit. One nest 5 feet off the ground in a tree and one about 20 feet in the air in another tree. Love to see the bird. We have so many different birds here, not an experienced birder so I don't know what they all are. But they are fun to watch. We have golden/orangish bird is pretty, blue jays and cardinals many more, the female cardinal attack our pickup side mirrors. I guess I better try and buy a digital camera and take pics. Love Oma

Morning Oma,

I did a good bit of research for the nest and am convinced it is an Oriole's nest. Funny you should say a golden/orangish bird - it just might be your Oriole but with a bit of black. Will post a picture in another reply.
