Okay, This Really Is My Absolute Last Oat Test — I Promise

Hi All,

I know I said that last time, but before condemning oats forever, I just had to confirm my results with one last, truly definitive test, which I did yesterday.

For my last trial, I ate a bowl of guaranteed pure, (certified wheat free), Oatios, (described in previous posts), and almost exactly three hours later, it thoroughly flushed out my GI tract. There were no other noticeable symptoms, just good, old-fashioned, uncontrollable D.

The reason I decided to try it one more time, is because I figured that even though my six-week reaction episode to oats had ended about a week ago, I would still have quite a few antibodies in circulation from the previous oat challenge, so trying a test one more time should yield a good, clear indication of sensitivity to oats, if one exists, and obviously, it does.

I'm satisfied now - there is no longer even one tiny speck of doubt in my mind. I am absolutely, positively certain that I am definitely avenin sensitive. Oats will never again be a part of my diet.

LOL. It was over in just a few hours, with no lingering after effects. That's why I had to test it again, because the reactions were so mild, that I just couldn't believe they were bona fide prolamin, (gluten-type), reactions. I didn't even notice any significant cramping. The stuff is more effective than most laxatives, with fewer side effects. LOL.

Well, there was a small to moderate amount of gas that passed with the D, of course, but no noticeable bloating, and no residual problems with gas.

Avenins from different cultivars of oats elicit response by coeliac peripheral lymphocytes.

Objective. The avoidance of oats in coeliac patients is still controversial. If oats is confirmed to be safe, it would be a valuable component and offer more variation in a gluten-free diet. The aim of this work was to evaluate whether avenins from different varieties of oats show different abilities in the activation of coeliac peripheral lymphocytes. Material and methods. In order to assess whether the immunogenic effect of oats varies according to the cultivar, peripheral lymphocytes from 10 coeliac children were exposed to avenins from four different oats varieties: Lampton, Astra, Ava and Nave. Lymphocyte proliferation and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) release in the culture medium were measured as indexes of immune activation. Results. All the varieties of oats tested were immunogenic, with Lampton and Ava avenins inducing lymphocyte activation similar to that activated by wheat gliadin, while Astra and Nave avenins showed less immunogenicity, but still with a measurable effect. Conclusions. There are still concerns about the suitability of including oats in a gluten-free diet. Coeliac patients consuming oats-containing food should be carefully monitored, until there is more evidence to show the safety of oats and varieties of low-toxicity oats.

Hey, thanks for posting that, Mike!

I'm glad to see that I'm not a total freak, (just a partial freak, LOL). I really think that the "experts" advocating the use of oats by celiacs are simply not checking closely enough for reactions. In my own case, it took about six weeks for the D to begin, and it wasn't anywhere near as serious as the reactions that I used to have before I stopped eating wheat. In fact, the only symptom that I got from eating, oats seemed to be D, as far as I could tell. Still, it resulted in D, each time that I ate oats, once the threshold for triggering reactions had been reached, (IOW, after eating them for about six weeks).

It's interesting that every variety of oats that they tested, showed at least a measurable effect. That means that the campaign promoting oats for celiacs is definitely, (as I suggested before), a case of claiming that "a little poison is OK, as long as you don't overdo it". One would think that the "experts" would know better.
