Ok, it's now conclusive. Bacterial overgrowth. I have a perscription of 10 days worth of Neomycin and an appt to follow up in 2 weeks to see how or if it helped. After the antibotic is gone he said to start eating a couple of yogurts he recommended or taking a probiotic. Also mentioned avoiding beans, onions and mushrooms due to some of the undigestable carbs found in those.
As far as my labs go he says he's never seen results like mine. Not sure this is good or bad other then he said he was going to send the results to Dr Pimentel to see what his thoughts were. What it showed was very high methane starting at baseline and then eventually very high hydrogen after a couple of hours. He says (and I've read it as well) that most folks either show one or the other. The reason why is that the methane producing bugs use the hydrogen as energy and thus produce methane so it blocks or uses up all the hydrogen produced by other bacteria.
He was going to perscribe rifaximin but I mentioned the studies by Pimentel on methane used neomycin and he changed his mind, though given my results he thinks we might need to do one and then the other.
As I mentioned before, once I get better I plan on writing up something on what I've found along the way.
Later,
Mike

Here's one of the yogurts he recommended:

Hope you have better luck with the Neomycin than me. It made me nauseated and finally after almost a week I started throwing up. I discontinued it after that. My D also became worse. Good Luck!

P.S. The Neo is much cheaper than the Rifaximin. So it is a good test to see if you improve with the Neo and then if you do go on to Rifaximin.

Don't remember ever seeing this one before:

Wonder why the white coats don't promote this one for colitis?L. rhamnosus
* Rhamnosus stimulates an immune response to invading foreign organisms.
* Rhamnosus suppresses rotoviruses and diarrhea-causing organisms.
* Rhamnosus is effective in treating colitis.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Good question, guess I'll have to do some research. :)tex wrote:Don't remember ever seeing this one before:

Thanks. I can see how it would make someone nauseous depending on what was dying off or being released during the die off. How long did you do it for, was it less than a week or did you continue the full 10 days? After you were done did you consume yogurt or a probiotic to replace the good bacteria lost?Pat wrote:Hope you have better luck with the Neomycin than me. Wow!
Ok, this is just crazy and it has me worried that it isn't just a placebo effect, but after just 3 doses yesterday my BM this morning was absolutely normal. Easy to pass (in fact it was so easy I was worried that it was D), well formed and I was done in one shot! So that's what normal is like. LOL
I know it's too early to count my chickens, but it seems I might be onto something, at least for myself. *knock on wood*

Wow!!!! I'm so happy for you! I'm actually jealous.
I did take the Neo for a week. It made me nauseated from the start but got worse and worse as the week went on. When I started throwing up I discontinued it. And the D was worse than ever. I did take a probiotic by Solaray called Multidophilus for at least a week. And I took Diflucan.

They sure are. But the last couple of days were not so normal.
Saturday I was fine, but yesterday I was back to the problems I've had in the past. Having to go, only going a bit at a time and having to go over and over again and not feeling well, back ache as well, and anxiety.
Today seems a bit more in the normal direction, but not like last week. Hopefully the trend will improve this week.

Ok, I haven't reported since over a week and a half ago. Most days were very normal, only an off day this last weekend. And since going off the antibiotic this weekend I've gotten a bit more and more constipated, small and some pebble like.
Saw the GI Dr again today. Stated again that he's never seen anything like my results and in fact was going to show Dr Pimentel the lab results the next time he talked with him as the first one to talk about.
He also perscribed Xifaxan (rifaximin) 400 mg 3 times per day for 10 days. I'll let you all know how it goes.
I'd say that I'm 80-90% back to normal, I've been feeling great the last few days. In fact I've gained a few pounds since I stoped taking the antibotic. Which is a good thing.
Thanks,
Mike
