Anybody allergic to BandAid adhesive?

Hi it's just me wondering again. Funny how odd things pop into one's mind in relation to MC.

My skin always has broken out from BandAid adhesive. Since there is gluten in it do you think that could be why? Does anyone else have this problem? If yes, maybe we can add this to the growing list of "nitnoids." And wouldn't it be wonderful if we discover a quick and easy gluten intolerance test! What do you think?

Yes, I have an allergic reaction to bandages. There are alternative bandages, but I don't know the name of them. I know when I go for a blood test they use a type of tape that looks like ribbon and I have no problem with that. If they put one of those little round bandages on me I look like I've been sucked on by an octopus with one sucker on his tenticle.

Yepper I am most definatly allergic to adhesive...Heck I am allergic to the stuff they stitch people with unless they have changed it in later years. I can't wear a bandaid long before I have red swelling itchy places. Good lock in findin bandages that don't do that. I'd like to find a good one. Love Oma

Yep, count me in here too. I break out (especially after removing the bandaid) in small red bloches and bumps. I have begun to ask for "allergy tape" when they put the tape over the cotten when taking blood. I just politely tell them that I am allergic to the tape.

Regular bandaids also do that, especially in the bend of my arm. That is the worst place.

I thought I was just weird!

Well I don't know if this counts, but I have a severe allergic reaction to the adhesive on the nicotine patches, and that is the reason I have not used those to quit smoking, and why I use the gum. I at first was determined to not let it get to me, and kept putting them on. Well after I think less then two weeks, I still had the original hives from the first ones and then the most recent ones, and was scratching so much, I gave up. I looked pretty funny with these great big hives on all over my body. And sometimes when I have gotten blood tests done, I don't leave them on very long before I pull them off, but I was left with red splotches, and itchy. So far bandaids haven't done that, so still use them.

What next, right? You have to wonder why our bodies start to break down so much?

Tips from when I used to sell my plasma:

Hold your arm in the air for about five minutes with a cotton bell pressed against the needle hole. You probably won't need a bandage at all. For the rest of the time try paper bandages. They don't stay on very long, but they don't make my skin break out.

Me too. Like Wendy I got red splotches from the nicotine patches, but by then I was over the worst part of quitting so I just quit the patches too. I get the same reaction from most bandaids, but find the fabric ones are less irritating than the plastic ones. Isn't this funny? I never have known anyone allergic to adhesives til now. We really are all related!

The only thing that ever bothered me that I can remember was the nicotine patches. I persevered and wore them anyway but I'd stay red for several days. Just kept looking for different places to put them. Sometimes I even stuck them on my stomach.

I had severe redness and itching under the initial hormone patch I was on, then had it changed to the Alora patch which has done very well. It will still get a little pink if left on too long, but nothing like the initial one.
It's the adhesive, I'm sure, but I wonder if perhaps the estrogen in the first one didn't promote the irritation. If I ever get a med book for the gluten sensitive, I'll have to check on those patches to see if they have gluten in them.

Count me in on irritation/reactions to adhesive bandages of any type. I try to avoid them like the plague. I also have a hard time finding the paper bandages that Sally recommends but when I do, I buy them in quantity since I am always getting paper cuts, gardening cuts, etc.
