Feeling hot but temperature's not???

Ok this is strange. I've had this symptom before but still not sure what causes this. At night I'll wake up feeling like I'm hot and have a fever or the room is too hot. But I look at the room temperature and if anything it's cool (65-67 degrees F), and I take my temperature and it's cool as well (96-97 degrees F).

What might be causing this?

I have one idea, but I thought I'd ask before I steer the thread in that direction.

Well, it's probably not menopause.

Sorry--not really making light of your situation. Don't know why you are having this symptom, but you can be sure many of us can relate!

Well, it could very well be. I'm almost 40, I'll be 39 next week. :)

So in Menopause, this is what has happened to you two? You feel hot, yet your body temperature and the room is not?

Have to admit that menopuse came to mind too, of course, coming from a woman!!! WHEW!!!!!! I'm telling you that the heat waves and out of body experiences

can be something else.. They come on at any time of day or night and DANG!!!! I can turn into a real little

Are you taking any new meds, anything containing niacin, any new foods added into your diet??????

Ok, I read up a bit on Hot Flashes, and it's still not clear to me that it's similar. I can't tell if it's a real increase in body temperature or just feels like an increase in temperature. At least one site mentioned a slight increase in body temperature, but all the others say nothing about body temperature changing.

They seem to indicate that it's due to changes in estrogen levels, though some sites indicate that serotonin is involved. And some mention that this can happen with men who have low testosterone. I have high total, but a low free count; at least the last time I checked this was the case.

Though I'm wondering more about Serotonin instead. And here's why. I started taking an SSRI several months back and noticed that I didn't wake up at night very often feeling hot, but since I started tapering the SSRI a couple of weeks ago to eventually stop taking it I noticed that I am waking up again and feeling hot. Probably should have kept a diary about how I felt.

No niacin added that I know of Dee.

Oh, and my estrodial (sp) which is the male version of estrogen was a tiny bit higher than "normal" according to my natreopath, but not according to the endocrinologist.

Mike,
You stated that you started taking an SSRI a couple months ago and now you want to taper down to get off of it. And how are you going about tapering it down????
What is your reason to stop the anti-depressant so soon???

Actually, it's probably been more like 4 or 5 months or so that I've been taking the SSRI.

I'm tapering as the Dr indicated to do so. Cut the pill in half and take it each night as normal.

I was taking the SSRI to help with anxiety and panic attacks, I don't seem to have them and wanted to remove a drug that I might not need anymore. The only way to see if I need it is to start removing it, I know that I need to taper as it can cause "withdrawal symptoms", I put it in quotes as they're not sure if it's really a withdrawal or something else.

I hate to tell you this, but men go thru their own kind of Menopause. And My husband has been having hot flashes and tells me It;s hoy in here I swear you could freeze Ice cubes.....Then the next week he cranks the heater up. I my self am going thru my seconf menopause...First was surgically induced and the second is natural>>>go figure! But I can relate to the hot!!!!! A freezer wouldn't help when that happens. So is it that you "feel" hot, or is it that you really are hot temperature wise?

Have you taken your temperature during a hot flash?

Funny word that one: men- o- pause....hmmmm. Yeah Mike menopause is not fro the faint of heart...it seems to be different for different women, and like Oma, I have read that men go through a similar phenomenom but with different hormones involved. I always just say that I have "hot blood" which is a joke as I am usually freezing now....
it would be indeed inteesting if you did document this and if there mite be a connection to the SSRI ....and no, my temp never reflects the internal feeling of heat or the red face.....

Mike #####I can be sitting in a room where ther a/c is set at 68 deg and feel hot. Si I believe it's a matter of feeling hot 90 % of the time. Sometime I will fell as if I have a temp but don't. My husband agrees that men have their own type of menopause, So Myself I think you may have early menopause man style. At least you'll be able to agree with a woman when she states hot flashes are real. By the way I do not take hormone replcement but may have to if it helps my bones. That subject is still being discussed with the Doctor. Love Oma

I agree with Oma. Feel hot but room temp may be cool and internal temp is usually on the slightly low side.

Mike,
No time to take my temperature during a hot flash because sometimes they only last 30 seconds.
Mine start in the upper chest area and travel up to my forehead. Feels like I have a serious blushing going on. And there aren't many things that make me blush!!!

Now some women have what they call night sweats and can wake up soaking wet from them.
I don't think with women that there would be a rise in body temperature.
