Jean's List of Corn Products/Additives

Post by Jean »

Corn
Corn is hidden in as many or more products as gluten. One of the biggest problems is corn syrup. It is in almost all soft drinks (diet soft drinks contain artificial sweeteners made with corn), hard candy, ketchup, barbeque sauce, mustard, salad dressing, fruit juice, etc. Corn is used in many forms in medications. It is often used as a pill binder in the form of starch. Liquid medications are almost always made with corn syrup. I have been unable to find an over-the-counter analgesic (an entrepreneurial pharmacists would be wise to market one).

Here is the list of corn ingredients to eliminate. This was a much harder list to compile because there are no organizations like the Celiac groups. The asterisks indicate that the item could be made from corn. The frustration with the corn list is that so many things could be derived from corn. Play it safe and contact the manufacturer. Again, I do not claim to have every possible ingredient on this list.

Most of the BareMineral (bareminerals.com) cosmetics are corn free. Freeda Vitamins (freedavitamins.com) make a series of vitamins that are free of just about every allergen.

The thing that I worry about with corn is the new labeling regulations do not include corn, and I'm afraid that it will push many companies into using more corn additives so that they can say a product is wheat, soy or diary free. When the gluten free labeling takes place in 2008, I think it will be even more of a problem for us corn intolerants.
