Update on my upside down tomato plants!!! I got them planted in there buckets today. I got little roma's . Drilled a 2" in diameter hole in the bottom of each bucket. Then put a little mesh screen around the little plant and while Jack held onto the little plant we turned the bucket right side up and I filled it with dirt. Cut out two boards and turned the bottom of the bucket right side up to let the little fellas get a 2 week root base..
I can't wait to see how they do. I'll hang them upside down off of brackets out on my patio where they will get full fun!! I may even plant some herbs in the top of the bucket..
I love to experiment with flowers and veggie plants...

Thanks for the update. It's a bit late to be getting tomatoes started down here where I live, but I may have to try that next year, (I'll benefit from your experience). Do you use 5 gallon plastic buckets? One plant per bucket? Do some varieties work better than others? Are tomatoes the only vegetables that work well, growing that way? Sorry to be so inquisitive?

Please let me know how they do, this year.

Love,
Tex

Hi!
Since I picked the roma's they only get 24" so I went with a 2 gallon bucket. One plant per bucket. If you go with a bigger tomato like a beef steak or better boy, etc., you use a 5 gallon bucket.. You'll need something sturdy to hold the weight of the dirt.

I haven't tried this yet, but people grow red and green peppers in them too...
I'll keep you posted on their progress!!!

I've seen them grown that way and it seemed to work just fine.

Good Luck with yours.
