Reacting to Something
Well, I've finally taught myself to be quite good on the gluten free diet, but the last two Sundays in a row now, I've had a major D episode in the afternoon...a couple hours after lunch. I am sad to say, after many good experiences there, that I'm probably reacting to our routine Sunday morning breakfast at the new diner in town. I get omlets, and have been fine for months.
I've had that mild reaction feeling and thought I solved it in the grocery store last week when I re-read the fudgcicle ingredient list only to be dissappointed that they contain malt powder (I LOVE Fudgcicles!). But now I've avoided those for a week and here I am still reacting. I usually take 18 to 24 hours to react to gluten, so thats bugging me that maybe this reaction is only a 6 hour delay if it's the diner food.
Well, just venting, ranting. Just when you think you're doing really well, something bites you!
Welcome newbies! You have found and AWESOME group of friends.

Hi Katy:
Thank You for the "welcome" I've been absolutely in "awe" of everyone here. Last night my hubby; David asked me;"Does that computer chair only have your name on it today or are you just having a selfish moment?" LOL
On a serious note however, he was just teasing and he loves me very much. Usually it's him on the computer ALL DAY and yesterday I did hog it the entire day. LOL

May God and All His Angels, watchover, protect and guide you "One Day At A Time".
Katy,
Are you sure that absolutely nothing on the menu for Saturday afternoon, or evening could be suspect? I have to admit, though, that a lot of members seem to react about six hours after eating gluten.
Joan,
Don't worry, I'll never tell.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Katy-
How frustrating! Have you inquired @ the diner at all to see if you could figure it out? Sometimes it's a mystery! To my dismay I cannot tolerate the frozen GF/DF pancakes from Trader Joe's - they are yummy, convenient and affordable (rare for GF products!), but for some reason they bother me. It is so frustrating! Could it be something as simple as griddle/pan cross-contamination that could be remedied? I love going out for breakfast - one of the easiest meals to eat out and not feel deprived
I always read Fudgesicle ingredient lists - I used to love them, too - I keep hoping some manufacturer will omit the malt part...I can have Ore-Ida Tater Tots but not store-brand - this GF thing always keeps you thinking, that's for sure!

Eating breakfast out is one of the trickiest things for me. Eliminate eggs and gluten and there's not much left to eat. However - I have found a restaurant that makes a potato skillet using fresh potatoes. I need to find out if they're cooking with soy oil.
Katy,
I have a recipe for homemade Fudgesicles somewhere. I'll post it when I can find it. I used to make them all the time when my kids were small. I'd freeze them in those Tupperware popsicle containers.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.

The problem with dinners and cafe's is that unless you know them well, they don't tell all thier tricks to make food look and taste great, there fore you have a flare from something you shouldn't eat or from cross contamination.
Ask them to tell you the litchen routine and ask what is cooked separate or is it all cooked with same oil etc. I hate it when I find a great place and I get a flare from it. Good Luck Katie Love Oma
