You won't believe my visit with new GI doc!!!!!!!!
The young doctor I saw yesterday at OHSU (Oregon Health & Science University) is also an Associate Professor of Medicine. She asked if i had been tested for Celiac....I said the blood test was negative...."pshaw!! that test is worthless she says!!!" I showed her the enterolab results and she nodded and said....that's what I thought!! She had heard of Dr. Fine. Her diagnosis is also that Ihave Celiac Sprue and then she told me that when she learned in my letter that I had Hashimotos' disease along with the Leucocytic Colitis she was sure I had Celiac since they usually go together. She said we could go the endoscopic biopsy route but didn't see the need of that unless I needed the actual proof positive....as far as she is concerned she is 98% positive that it is celiac.
She is changing the treatment somewhat and taking me off Entocort ( I am only on one tab a day)& wants me to try a short trial of pepto bismol for a short time and see how i respond. She doesn't use the big gun(steroids) till the others show they don't work. she acknowledged that every body is different and there is no one pill fits all. AND> get this...She apologized for the previous treatment I had with my primary care doc and the GI doc !!! and indicated I could just stay with OHSU. To save on driving she gave me her e-mail address and told me to write & tell her how I am doing or ask any questions and she will return my note within the day if possible!!! Ad to call if I don't hear back within 2 days .She was so empathetic and validating....she treated me with dignity and often prefaced a comment with..."You probably already know this, but....." She was pleased that I am already taking VSL#3 as my probiotic and said it is backed with considerable research proving it's efficacy. She was pleased that I had found a support group on-line!!!
She told me that I had been a very sick woman and would need time for my gut to heal and to make sure I eat lots of protein as that is what heals the gut, and to be cautious with raw veggies and fiber for a while more. I am so pleased to finally find a doctor who isn't tripping over his/her deity!! Thanks for all your prayers.

Sunny,
Awesome experience. It doesn't get any better than that, does it. She definitely has all her ducks in a row. The most impressive part, as far as I'm concerned, is the fact that she was willing to hand out a celiac diagnosis, in the face of a negative celiac blood test, and without even doing an upper endoscopy to verify the presence of villous atrophy. That amounts to saying that all the current "official" diagnostic criteria for defining celiac disease is not worth even considering, when making a diagnosis, and it certainly validates stool testing at Enterolab.
Good luck with the new program.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanx everyone for your encouragement...just a few months ago I was in such despair and now things are looking up...methinks there is a lesson there for me!! I sent the doc an e-mail and she wrote right back! I was thinking as I read your posts...this gal teaches other GI docs!! In fact, my former GI was in one of her seminars a few weeks back!! I am so happy that Norman seems to have moved back home ...here's hoping he stays!!!!

Good Going Joan:
You've brought it to their attention and now it's up to them to follow through.
The more information we give them the better prepared they will be to care for us. Plus they will realize that were serious about what's going on and we are going ahead and researching this disease.
Good Job Sweety:
Love and God Bless:
