We had a granduaghter born 6/21/05 In Oklahoma City Oklahoma. Her name is McKensie Ryan Pettigrew. As soon as Daddy sends the pictures to my Cmputer we can see what the Angel looks like. That makes 8 grand daughters and two Grand sons......one grand son and two grand daughters born within the last 5 month......wow! Love Oma

Congratulations, Oma!

Great name for the little girl.

You mention having 8 grandkids - 8 girls and 2 boys. Did anyone else read recently that fewer boys are now being born? I don't think anyone knows why, but there are some theories. Interesting..........

Love,

Polly

Hi Polly,

I don't know how the scietific world views this particular example of this phenomenon, but my theory is that nature automatically balances sex ratios for any species, by modifying birth rate ratios based on attrition. Since far fewer males are being lost to wars and other major events, there is no longer the need for birth ratios to be skewed toward the male gender, as it once was.

What is so incredible, is how the balance can be changed so rapidly. For example, if a population of whitetail deer, (a subject I happen to be familiar with), becomes drastically depleted by disease, drought, or whatever, the birth ratios will become significantly skewed toward females in the very next cycle, (whitetail deer breed in the fall, and fawns are born in the April, May, June timeframe).

IOW, by increased birth rates of females, the population will have a better chance of increasing ASAP. Normally, the ratio is slightly tilted toward male births, because of slightly higher attrition rates of males during courtship competition, etc.

Also, if a population of whitetails is suddenly confronted by an extremely severe pattern of weather while the does are carrying fawns, (such as an extremely dry, harsh winter, where spring forage is likely to be severly diminished), many of the fetuses will simply be absorbed by the mother's bodies, to compensate for the reduced carrying capacity of the habitat. Typically, they will have a single fawn, instead of the usual twins. Interestingly, again, the sex ratios of fawns will be skewed toward the female gender.

When conditions return to normal, the normal birth ratio pattern will resume. Nature is truly awesome.

Love,
Wayne
