Duration of a Gluten Reaction?

Post by kate_ce1995 »

Okay, how long do those of you on a gf diet react after ingesting an offending food by accident? I'm now 8 days into this latest flare. I don't want it to be 8 months like when I was waiting for a diagnosis. I've been so good during those 8 days, I have no idea what to do next. Maybe a new intolerance? I'm just getting down about it.

Hi Katy,

The problem is, when we are reacting, if we react long enough, the enteritis can trigger other "temporary" intolerances. If you haven't already done so, cut out all dairy products, and see if that helps. If a reaction continues for at least a few days, it can cause enzyme problems also, and it virtually always causes lactose intolerance, to some degree, because lactase is the first enzyme to go, (and the last to return, after the reaction ends). Cut out any fruits, (or any other sources), that may contain significant amounts of sorbitol, (such as peaches), or any other sugar alcohols, and try to limit your fiber intake, (definitely don't eat any lettuce). Sorbitol virtually always causes me to have D, even in pretty small amounts, (small amounts of sorbitol, that is, not D).

I'm non-typical, in that I never could tell that I reacted to gluten after a single "dose", (but I haven't ingested any since I went GF, six years ago), so maybe I would react differently, now. What I am sure of is that when I tested oats, a year or so ago, it took several weeks before I started having mild reactions, and they would begin a few hours after eating it, and during the next few hours, it would pretty well purge my system. The next day I would be pretty much D-free. (Remember, though that I am one who usually reacts with alternating D and C). I was eating it for breakfast, twice a week. I continued the test for six weeks, and then I decided that I had enough evidence to prove that I was intolerant of avenin, (the prolamin in oats that is equivalent to the gluten in wheat), so I stopped eating it. Evidently I ate it once too often, because the D continued on and off for six more weeks, after that.

After the D stopped, and things settled down for a few weeks, (IOW, after my gut healed again), I tested the oats one more time, (for good measure), and sure enough, it cleaned me out a few hours later. The next day I was fine, though, and there was no more D after that single episode. I think that's more typical of what happens to most people, who get a single dose of gluten. Once we get in to a full "flare", though, it can take extraordinary measures to get things back under control, again.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Katy for me it depends on the level of gluten,,,to which i can never know..some foods have more gluten in them than others... for instance if i ate a nibble of white bread my tum would be aching for 2-4 days.. and yet a cake with choc would be possibly longer and more intense..
I dont always eat gluten but i am experimenting with food stuff now and then..Its still early days for me...but gluten is definately an intolerance for me...difficulty is trying to get that through my thick doctors skull..lol!!
