Dairy Sensitivity Temporary or Permanent?
Well, I've been in a flare for 2 weeks now. I'm controlling the urgency and number of trips a day by eliminating fresh vegetables and dairy. And THAT is a tall order. I had a lot of problems over the weekend after a company picnic at which I ate tons of veggies off the veggie platter, and then the next day we were at my parent's house for my dad's b-day and again ate lots of veggies off a veggie platter and had ice cream.
Dairy has been the center of my gf diet, so I really hope this is temporary. Maybe it's really the veggies that are causing the problem and I know that will go away once I heal more. But for now I'm avoiding both. It's a hard time of year to avoid fruits and veggies. I've got a plum tree laden with fruit, a garden with zuccinni, cucmbers and tomatos just coming into season, and a raspberry patch that I'm not really picking from right now largely because it is SO tangled this year after a harsh snowy winter...Its one big mass...I slowly working on making rows in it so I can support the canes through the winter...its almost impossible to get into.
Well, that's my whine for the morning. Off through a rainy morning to work. Hopefully the construction job won't need me to stop by today because it will be a mud pit!

I'm sorry you're having a flare. I agree that summer is a terrible time to be avoiding fresh fruits and vegetables, especially when you have a garden full of them. I hope you can at least enjoy the cooked vegetables, but fresh tomatoes are hard to beat.
I sure would like the responses of others to be that dairy sensitivity is temporary. I've been avoiding it for a year now and would love to occasionally eat yogurt again.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Katy,
You may be in the same boat that I was in. I couldn't handle dairy before my gut healed, but now I can eat all I want, without any D. It does often cause C, though, so that is probably a sign of a reaction of sorts, (my reactions have typically been alternating D and C, regardless of the trigger food), but the effect is only a minor problem, these days, nothing to get excited about. Also, it seems to make my arthritis worse, but it's not necessarily a strong or consistent effect. Since arthritis itself seems to wax and wane, it's not very easy to pin down a definite connection. Because of that, I don't eat much dairy these days, but I keep "playing" with it, hoping to learn something.
When we have enteritis, we almost always become temporarily lactose intolerant, because the trauma at the brush border regions of our small intestine, causes a suppression of lactase enzyme production. Once the enteritis ends, the lactase production will return to normal levels. So, if dairy was OK for you before this current flare, then temporary lactose intolerance may possibly be the extent of your current problem with dairy, and lactose-free milk, or yogurt, (or aged cheeses), might still work. It's certainly possible that they may not agree with you, though, because they didn't work for me before my gut healed, (they caused D), which suggests that casein intolerance may be worse when our gut has suffered damage because of a flare. Gloria - I don't know if any of this is any encouragement or not, for your situation.
I have to say, though, that before my gut healed, any significant amount of raw vegetables would practically turn me inside out. I'm still gun-shy about eating very much food like that, because of the fiber.
I hope you can figure out a diet, so that your gut can begin to heal.
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Katy, Gloria and Tex:
Ohhhhh how I agree about the raw veggies and fruits. Went to my God-child's 25th wedding anniversary and here I am sitting at the table with my knife and fork pushing, pulling and seperating ALL the raw veggies out of the salads like a disobedient child trying to get out of eating all the good stuff! LOL
Right now in our area there are all kinds of homegrown sweet corn stands. OMG! It makes my mouth water just thinking about having "corn on the cob" with lots of butter and salt! Then reality sets in and I tell my self "Go ahead idiot, eat it and start back at the beginning!" David has been so supportive. My cousin stopped at a stand to buy some sweet corn and asked David if we wanted some to. David said"No thank you, Jodi can't enjoy it with me so I'm not eating it in front of her."
I think he loves me..............what do you think?

Good for David
I'm going to quote David. DH will be ticked, I'm sure. It will probably start a war.
When we were on the road DH HAD to eat the restaurant bread even after I told the waitress no bread, please. DH sure doesn't need it........
I think YES he does love you very much.

I was truly blessed when David and I were put together. LOL He truly cares about me and is very suportive. Actually we take care of each other. David has COPD and Prostate Cancer right now he's doing pretty well except for being on oxygen 24/7 so now he's supporting and comforting me through some rough times.
What's really interesting at our house is when we both decide to have "hormonal hot flashes" at the same time. It gives a true picture of true love. We just set in our seperate chairs and send lightening bolts at each other until the hot flashes subside. LOL

Hi Katy....sorry about your flare! I found out that fresh blue berries give me horrible gas....ratz...they are so good for us! I also have been feeling tired and blue, about moving, new job, etc....but, I think I have been eating more grain products. I am going back on the low carb diet .....will see if things improve. We'll get through this!
I am still taking 2 Entocort/day, but things aren't perfect, but..... no real D.
Love, JJ

Back before I figured out what was wrong with my digestive system, my GI doc advised me to eat Cream of Wheat for breakfast, because, as he said, "it's easy to digest".
