Ok this is news to me and I wondered about it for a bit. I just read this in the Information about Diet section. But Toothpaste contains gluten? Are there GF toothpastes out there?

Boy, I think I need to contact my local Celiac group to find out more about gluten and where it is. :(

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike. Here is a list of gluten free toothpaste from gfcf.com (Gluten Free Casein Free):

Arm & Hammer Dental products 1-800-524-1328

Tom's of Maine toothpaste 1-800-775-2388

Crest (Procter & Gamble) 1-800-492-7378
Kid's Crest Sparkle Fun Flavor toothpaste is GFCF as well as
Crest's entire Cavity Protection line and Tarter Control Protection
line (adult & kid's toothpaste)

Colgate-Palmolive 1-800-221-4607
Note from Colgate-Palmolive: Sorbitol is an ingredient which can be grain derived and may be found in toothpastes. Our sorbitol is corn-derived.
Colgate toothpaste, all variants

Ultra Brite toothpaste, all variants 1-800-221-4607

Ultra Brite w/Baking soda 1-800-221-4607

Hope this helps. BTW my dentist recommended Colgate Total a few years ago...but not because it was gf. She just thinks it's one of the better toothpastes out there. David and I use it and we both like it.

Love, Carrie

Hi Mike,

We had a big debate over toothpaste in the old GF Kitchen once last year - if you'ld like you can go back and do a search. However, Carrie did a wonderful job of giving you up to day information - GO Carrie!!

Eventhough I am MI I still use regular tooth paste - I just don't swallow it - I don't react to it.

Love,
Karen

Ack, well I should have waited for a reply as I went to the store and bought Tom's of Maine Toothpaste as I knew it was GF. But I use Colgate Total. LOL

But I did discover that the cereal I have been eating recently is "Wheat Free" not "Gluten Free". It contains Oat Flour. I know there is some controversy there, but I wonder.

Hi Mike,

Also, I've heard that some of the cleaning things that the dentist uses contain gluten, but that you can request they get one that doesn't have it.

I use Colgate. I got a big supply at Sams in bulk the one time I've visited a new one not too terribly far from here. It's not top of the line, but it should last us a long, long time.

Yours, Luce

Mike - That's a bummer on the cereal!!

I am glad you've found that the cereal has oats in it - now you can eliminate that cereal and see if that was what has made you so miserable recently. Life gets better as you weed out those triggers one by one. We've all been there....

I wouldn't trust the cereal - oats being controversial - I always chose to leave out questionable items when I was searching for improvement; when you feel perfect you can add oats in again and see if they make you sick or not.

One down!!

Love,
Karen

Mike,

Yep, wheat free is not gluten free. Other harmful grains contain gluten like spelt, barley etc... I'm sure you are already aware.

Oats are very controversial and I have read there is a pure grain oat manufactured but I cannot remember its name. Those cross contamination questions are the trigger points for those of us who are gluten sensitive or celiac.

Jergens has out a cream that will add color to your skin gradually for that summery look, but when I read the ingredients it indeed said it contained avena sativa (which is oat). My daughter saw this in Walgreens or Walmart and bought me some and I gave it back to her to use. One must be careful (listen, your a male so I don't see you using cosmetics much- lol) when buying makeup and look for triticale which is wheat derivative and they use it in many cosmetics.

I applaud you upon being so health conscious as I've noticed from previous postings. We gather the best information from each other here.

Have a wonderful Fourth of July!!!

Tom's of Maine is a good toothpaste. I used to use it...can't remember why I switched back to my usual crest (what I grew up using). you may find you like it better anyway.

I use Crest Sparkle for kids, for several reasons - one, I've gotten mouth sores and I believe it's from toothpaste as I had recently switched just prior to getting mouth sores, and when I switched to Crest for kids, they immediately started going away. two, it's much easier on my teeth, while still providing cavity protection. I have VERY sensitive teeth from overbrushing (I'm OCD with my teeth too and brush for at least 5 minutes every morning and night), and Kids Crest does a REALLY good job of not making my teeth hurt, but yet protecting them. Sensodine, I've found, leaves a "mask" of goo on my teeth that makes food taste funny and honestly, just CAN'T be good for you!!!

Thanks, Christine, for the thumbs up for Crest Sparkle for Kids. My grandchildren are coming to visit later this month and I want to introduce them to it (they live in Canada and I have no idea what they've been using). What flavor(s) do you recommend???

Love,
Carrie

hmm dunno if there is a flavor.. I mean, I know they have cinnamon and stuff, but I just use "regular" :) It tastes like fruity mint. Pretty darn good. My hubby doesn't care for it tho LOL

I'd recommend regular for kids tho. My kids do NOT like anything "spicy" like cinnamon or spearmint. LOL spicy. I love that.

Christine, have you tried crest's senstivitiy toothpaste or colgates? I've used both and haven't felt a problem of residue, and it really helped the sensitivity problem (which gets worse this time of year when I eat too many sugary popsicles!). Of course I usually run the toothbrush with just water on in over my teeth when I'm done brushing anyway to make sure all the toothpaste is gone.

Carrie,

Would you mind cutting/pasting the info on GF/CF toothpastes into a post for the Info on Diet Forum. I don't want to lose this info in the "bowels" of the MMB. Pun intended! HAHAHAHA. Thanks. Maybe it could be in the form of a reply to Jean's article where she mentions that toothpaste might contain gluten.

Love,

Polly

I switched to baking soda from toothpaste when I read about this before on the other site. Side benefit is the sink sparkles...LOL

You are all brave, I have gone to just using baking soda as toothpaste. It works OK. Polly's idea of dry brushing works too.
