Here's Some Good News, (For A Change)

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Two new large medical studies recommend less frequent and less invasive colon exams for most people over the age of 50, (as far as cancer-screening is concerned). One study found that CT scans are just as effective as colonoscopies, in detecting pre-cancerous growths, and obviously, they are much less invasive, in addition to costing about half as much. Unfortunately, the cleanout is still required, however, (Hiss! Boo!) Of course, that won't work for diagnosing MC, since a colonoscopy, (or sigmoidoscopy), is required for taking biopsies. <sigh>

The other study, which followed 1256 patients who had tested negative for growths, found that none of the patients had subsequently developed colon cancer, so a ten-year followup exam was recommended, in place of the current 5-year interval, for patients with low-risk factors. Of course, some clinics already use these practices.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
