Question about lemons

Post by Andi »

I had been sipping cups of hot water with lemon all day at my desk at work. My stomach is feeling worse than it has in weeks and I almost embarrassed myself at work. I was feeling fine earlier today.
Are lemons bad for MC? If so, it will be horrible because all winter I drink either tea or hot water with lemon most of the day.
Are there any herb teas that could make MC bad?
If anyone knows anything about lemons in hot water, and herb tea, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

Andi,

It's the citric acid in lemons that causes problems for most of us. Lemons and limes have particularly high concentrations of citric acid. As much as I loved lemonade, I had to avoid it while I was recovering. It doesn't bother all of us, though. Interestingly, lemon juice is recommend by some, to help settle digestive system "issues", based on the fact that it also contains malic acid, (which is found in many OTC "upset stomach" medications). Apples are high in malic acid, but unfortunately, they're also high in fiber.

You might be able to handle lemon juice OK, in limited use, but sipping on it all day, is probably an OD, since it's way above the norm.

Many members have found that many herbal teas are very soothing to the tummy, and can actually help to "regulate" motility.

Tex,
Thank you so much. I guess I will have to cut down on drinking hot water and lemon all day, maybe just once or twice in the day. I will try that and see if it makes a difference.
It seems that nearly everything I really enjoy eating is not good for MC.
Thankfully it appears I can still drink my herbal teas though.
Thanks for the info.

Yup, sounds like it could be too much acid. Like Tex said though, we often can tolerate some of these things once the gut starts to heal, so don't dispare too much. I personally love my ginger tea.

Hi Katy,
My sister is an acupuncturist and said i should drink ginger tea throuhout the day. Do you make your own ginger tea or do you buy it already packaged?
She told me that i should get fresh ginger and boil some of the root each day and drink it throughout the day. It is "warming" for the gut, apparently we are deficient in Yang in our spleens and kidneys.
Did you get snow yesterday iin Springfield? We had snow in the Montpelier area but it did not stick. Snowed all morning though.

I love "fresh" boiled ginger tea with a little honey in it.
Very comforting.

It does sound good. I have some ginger at home and when i go home I am going to make some.
Been drinking peppermint tea all morning, fresh peppermint leaves from a local source. It is better on my stomach than the lemon water i drank yesterday.

Put 4 cups of water in a saucepan.
Cut and peel about a 2" piece of fresh ginger root.
Bring water to a boil, add the ginger root and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
Cool and put in a container.
Then when you want it pour a cup, heat it up and add honey.
The only time that I add lemon to the ginger root and honey is when I feel a cold coming on.

mmmm :coffee2: Thank you, Dee.
I cannot wait to make it. It's getting cold up here in the north and that sounds perfect!
