For Those Who Are Not Intolerant Of Corn

Post by tex »

Hi All,

I used to love the old original Fritos, but I can't eat 'em any more, because they're just plain too greasy, apparently. I used to eat Frito-Lay Tostitos Restaurant Style tortilla chips, also, but I notice they're using soybean oil on those, these days. Soooooo, the other day, when I was doing some grocery shopping, I picked up a bag of Tom's Original Corn Chips, (Tom's Snack Co., of Columbus, GA).

I finally got around to trying them yesterday, and I was surprised to find that they have the flavor of the original Fritoy-Lay Fritos, but without all the grease. To add icing to the cake, they were salty enough, but the bag didn't contain about 10 pounds of salt, the way that Fritios do. IOW, I thought they tasted great, and I didn't seen any signs of the usual cruddy feeling that I always get after I eat Fritos. The ingredients include corn, salt, rice bran, and one or more of the following vegetable oils: canola, corn, cottonseed.

Here's the downside, though, if you worry about such things - the bag shows an allergy information warning that the product was manufactured on equipment that is used to process products that contain milk, wheat, and soy. I've begun to ignore such warnings on most products, though, (unless I have a reason to be suspicious), because if you cut out all the products that contain such a warning, there's not much left, in the way of processed snack foods.

I haven't noticed any ill effects, whatsoever, from eating them, so I plan to make them a regular. They're so good, I have a hard time putting them down. With Fritos, a queasy stomach usually told me when it was time to quit. YMMV, of course.

EDIT: As Rosan Rosanadana used to always say, Never Mind! Before attempting this at home, (as they say), read this post:

Okay, the moral of this story is: See how easy it is to rationalize our way into doing dumb things that we shouldn't do? I really thought that I could get away with ignoring that warning.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
