Alcoholic Drinks

I was wondering if anyone has tried alcoholic drinks? We are going on a cruise next week. I am not much of a drinker, but would like one once in a while and wondering it that is a no no. I really like one that is made with pineapple juice, vodka, and madori.

Does anyone have any comments on this?

one of view things that does not seem to have no effect on my CC is alcohol. Of course I would never drink bear, because of the gluten, but wine and port are fine. No reaction as far as I know. Although the last 1.5 year I have drunk very little alcohol, since I don't tolerate it very well. But than I talk about the normal alcohol reaction, getting tired, having a headache the next (of only two glasses of wine or port).

I have stayed away from red wine for years because it gives me an instant headache, but I do fine with the white wines. I haven't had any hard liquor recently. The one thing I would suggest is that you decide what you are going to eat before you have a drink. Even one drink can impair judgment, and you might not be as alert to landmines as you would be otherwise.

Hi Nancy,

I have found that I can tolerate pure, undistilled liquor (such as a vodka martini), but wouldn't go near any of the mixes. Since I'm intolerant of yeast, I stay away from wine and cannot have beer because of gluten. Anyhow, like Harma, I drink very rarely, and if I do, limit it to one drink, since it does 2 unpleasant things to me: interferes with a good night's sleep, and makes me feel crummy the next day.

I drink wine and Potato vodka only (regular vodka is made from grain and this gal isn't taking any chances!). I haven't taken a hard look at mixers yet, but I tend to stay with the wine more than the vodka.

I do think Marliss made a very good point about keeping your wits about you to avoid landmines. I hope you are going somewhere beautiful and fun. Please post pics so I can live vicariously through you! :lol:

Here is what I drink and seem to get away with.....

Dry white wine
Prosecco (sparkling dry white wine)
Red wine (no sulfa added if possible) As Gabes know my favourite is Australian Shiraz :grin:
Vodka (straight on the rocks or with lime juice)
Dry Sherry
Whisky (the distillation is meant to remove the gluten.....except I have read there could be gluten getting back in from the glue involved in the oak barrels Whisky is stored in. But I still have a glass occassionally)

I find sweet wine and port bloats me a bit. I think the sugar feeds the bacteria/fermentation in my guts.

Vodka isn't a no-no. You just have to look for potato vodka. Cognac - made from grapes, so it seems you're ok. :smile:

Lauren--

Ciroc Vodka is made from grapes and is widely available. If you can find red wines made by Turley from California, I highly recommend these as they are completely natural--fermented with wild, not commercial yeast. No chemicals at all, no added acid, sugar, sulfites, etc. Not filtered or "fined". No headache, etc. They are the only wines I do not react to....and I grew up in a winery. A lot of people don't realize how many different things are added to wine in addition to sulfites.

Chopin Vodka will be your best bet. I've carried it in several restaurants. It is made from 100% potatos and is quite common. It is pronounced just like the composer.

Oh, a cruise this time of year sounds perfect!

Re: alcohol; for those with mast cell issues (such as myself) alcohol is a no-no. Alcohol is a known mast cell destabilizer. IOW, a potential trigger for mast cell degranulation and ensuing symptoms. (In my case GI symptoms.) Because it is an identified trigger, I just avoid it altogether. But, I really miss that ocassional glass of wine when out with friends. Oh well, just another one of those trade offs that we all make in the name of better health.

Nancy, I don't know if you've been on a cruise since you got MC, but they have become quite attuned to food sensitivities. After you first board, go to speak with someone from the kitchen, preferably the chef, and explain your issues. Also let the waiter know. They will know every ingredient in every dish and will even have GF goodies available. You can also let them know before the cruise. Bon voyage!

I usually drink a full red wine like merlot or cab and seem to tolerate it well. I had read somewhere that this kind of wine has the least sugar and yeast, because they have all been used up. But this may not be true - Mags, do you know? I am going to look for the Turley wines.

I also have potato vodka occasionally.....Chopin.

Ant, I've been wanting to try Prosecco - you have given me the courage to do so!
